We acquired an Asus EEE model yesterday. Since it is so small and light it makes reading electronic books (of which we have a great library) a delight; it comes with a PDF reader already loaded. It has three USB ports and Ethernet, and uses a form of Linux, although it is possible to remove that and install the silly "Windows" system if one wishes.

It plays music of course and can be connected to the Internet. Also of course it is very cheap.

All we need do now to make it perfect is to work out how to install a few additional Linux programs.

Oooh yes?  Cool.  I had been eyeing those before christmas.  That I have a current laptop means I would not consider such an option just yet.

Also: MY IPOD DIED (sort of) LAST NIGHT.

GRRRRRRRRR

It's not really working: really slow, making loud mechanical clicking noises, and shaking.  :|  Under two years old, but I guess that that's that.  I'll send an email tonight anyway. GRrr.  Don't know if I want to spend several hundred on a new one.  But I don't know if I want a small mp3 player either.

I too looked at the Asus EEE with interest but the Ubuntu (Linux) Dell I've opted for is going really well - and at £309 (excluding hardware support) it wasn't that much more expensive than the EEE Smiley I'm posting from it now.

Does anyone know if this is worth doing? Or is it EVIL!?

http://fileextensiontype.com/open.aspx?file=flac&AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1

I mean the advertisement down below for "Download Free Scan" --which opens an executable file called "RegCure_Setup_15_RW.exe"

I'd sure like to see why my computer is so slow. I have an awful lot of data and busy behaviours; want to make sure there's nothing buggy going on.

For a free and relatively easy-to-use registry cleaner (Windows) I use the Eusing Free Registry cleaner (as I am clueless about the contents of the registry).

What I don't like is popup advertisements that promise to fix slow computers, if you download the offered software which then tells you that your problems can be solved, but first you have to pay $xxxx

I should be very careful about such programs - many are supposed to be scams or not worth the money.

Re RegCure: see http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/regcure-c4155.html as an example of someone who's had problems.

I think that a virus/trojan/spywaren scanner (like AVG) should work just fine for most things.

Most of these pop-ups are scams or worse. Many of the Reg cleaning programmes are actually the same proprietary software packaged differently: if you Google 'Registry Cleaning Software' or similar you'll come up with hundreds of scare stories. Presumably you have been carrying out the regular maintenance such as defragging your drives, TF? If not, that would be a good place to start.

I agree with Ron (and the others) on this.

I would never click on an advert that tried to open an executable file. It might be legitemate but my computer is too important to risk.

Why not use tools that Microsoft recommends?

http://www.microsoft.com/protect/products/computer/safetyscanner.mspx

(Disclaimer: I have never used the product myself. But Microsoft has no reason to recommend dodgy third-party products.)

Thanks to all advisors on this matter. With respect to the thread title I do declare I do not love computers.

OK, for some time I have been storing documents I use on a memory stick to save space on my computer (I can't be doing with CD Roms for various reasons.)  All has been going well, but now when I try to change a document there or save a new one I get the message "file is read only."  It didn't use to be.  I am not aware of doing anything to change its status.  How can I get it back to normal?  ie Remove the "read only" thing.

There is still plenty of space on the stick.

Find the file in Explorer (not Internet Explorer), right click, select properties and untick read-only

Thanks Andy, but I'm still confused.

I right click the Start button and press Explore, or I open My Computer.  The Removable Disk is there.  I right click Properties, but I can't see any Read Only box to untick.

Any further suggestions?

Is it the specific file that you're right-clicking, DB? It's not the drive but the individual files upon it which require reattribution.

It seems to be all the documents on the memory stick.  I get the message "Cannot save xxxx.  The file is read only."

Puzzled.

I did wonder whether it was the whole stick Don B. It might be that it's been corrupted in some way. Do you use "Safely Remove Hardware" before you unplug it? Windows is usually pretty tolerant if you don't but if I just unplug one of my hard drives (without doing SRH) and plug it into my Ubuntu laptop it says: you haven't unplugged that properly, now go back to Windows and do it again, you naughty boy - or words to that effect Wink

If you really can't change the read-only attribute for each file on the stick, you could try copying them all to your hard drive, change the read-only there, reformat the USB stick (right-click and select Format..), then copy them back.
