Oh, and you are likely to find that any devices that are already connected when you start up your computer cannot be "safely removed". It only seems to work with hot plugged devices. If someone here knows a way round that particular 'feature' I would be glad to know of it.

I get a warning that the device is being used if I'm browsing it etc, but closing windows seems to clear that. I've just tried removing an external drive which was plugged in when I started the PC and Windows said I couldn't do so now, try again later - so I tried again straight away and it worked OK.

I never used to bother too much with SRH but I have to now since Ubuntu won't mount an NTFS device if I don't safely remove it from Windows - it must be checking a marker of some sort on the drive which Windows updates when you do SRH. It doesn't object however if I do the same for a FAT device such as a USB stick.

Thanks, Bryn, and Happy Birthday and St Mark's Day, or whatever is left of it...

My last post was cryptic and composed late at night.  I knew I had missed Bryn's birthday and that it was St George's Day, and I muddled it up with St Mark's Day...

Anyway, I have got the shortcut working and seen the icon to disconnect on the bottom right of screen.  The memory stick is not full, and will not take any more documents.  It may have got corrupted as I didn't disconnect. As have all my CD Roms.

I'll know in future.

I was unable to login to a particular government website that I need. Apparently I hadn't logged in since March last year so it was supposed to convert my old login to something new but I was going round in a loop in the registration screens. The admin told me it's a Java Bean problem.

Never heard of that so just checked wiki, I'm none the wiser when they say stuff like:

The class must have a no-argument public constructor. This allows easy instantiation by editing and activation frameworks. Its properties must be accessible using get, set and other methods (so called accessor methods) following a standard naming convention. This allows easy automated inspection and updating of bean state by frameworks, many of which include custom editors for various types of properties. The class should be serializable. This allows applications and frameworks to reliably save, store and restore bean state in a VM and platform independent fashion...........

mind you reading about a composer here, I'm none the wiser:

He often is criticized for using relatively straightforward tonal cadential formulas at a time when tonality was breaking down. When viewed through the lens of timbre, however, many of his cadential passages operate in a more nuanced manner. Continuous, “natural” tonal syntax often is complicated by discontinuous orchestration at the exact moment of tonal resolution. In these cases, the cadence is perceived in a somewhat ironic light—as the concluding portion of a tonal narrative, a fiction. His cadential orchestration thus resonates with the larger sense of disintegrating order and rules at the fin de siècle.

Not if they are going to be as obvious as the Mahler one you refer to. Wink

A bit of an update re my Ubuntu laptop - Incy did ask me! Tongue Btw Incy, I guess installing Ubuntu didn't help you since it sounded from one of your more recent posts as if you've actually got a hardware problem.

Ubuntu is going really well. mp3 support is one of the immediate problems since Ubuntu cannot support it as shipped - it's a restricted format. I installed RealPlayer which works fine but I've also found out how to play mp3s in the 2 players that come with Ubuntu. I can't work out how to get Ubuntu to recognize xD picture cards though - I've got a slot on the front of the laptop but when I insert a card......nothing happens. I think no driver has been produced yet as it's another restricted format. Getting online using my USB modem is a bit arcane - I have to start the firewall manually then use the terminal to connect the modem.

I've partitioned my hard drive using gparted but I haven't managed to get PING to work to back up a partition to an external hard drive* - does anyone else use it?

But I don't have to worry too much about viruses!

The next version of Ubuntu - 8.04 Hardy Heron - is already released (last week) so I've got to decide whether to upgrade to it. Ubuntu moves onto a new version regularly.

* this is probably because it's in NTFS format - Ubuntu 7.10 supports NTFS but the Linux kernel, which is what PING relies on, doesn't.

Nice one Bryn  Wink but of course a google of straightforward tonal cadential formulas quickly gives the No 1 answer  Cheesy

That's as may be, but the quote couldn't really be about any other composer, because no other composer really does that thing. Your other quote, though, is obviously totally meaningless.  Cheesy Wink

I live a simple life and am quite happy just to listen to Mahler without dissecting his cadential formulas  Cheesy

Listening right now to the 'Titan' (Zander) on ClassicFM. No 5 Rattle/BPO is tomorrow night

Slightly off-topic, I know - but can anyone tell me SIMPLY how I can see what specific IP address a pc (using Win XP) is using?

Most straightfoward way (I don't know if it's really simple though) is:

Start->run

type cmd in the box that opens up (or do whatever you normally do to open a command prompt)

at the command line type

ipconfig /all

and amongst various bits of info about what network card you're using and so on will be your IP address.

There are various websites that will tell you too, but I can't recall the url for one at the moment, though you could go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sandbox and make a test edit and see what IP is recorded in the edit history.

I recently got a new laptop running Windows XP. I turned on the power switch. It all worked. It's still working.  Grin

Not this one IRF. I'll be sticking to XP on my desktop where I've got lots of apps which are Windows only. I've no desire to move to Vista either when XP seems to be doing a fairly good job. But I wanted a cheap laptop which does all the basic stuff - and getting a Dell with Ubuntu rather than Vista saved me c£70.

PING is not part of Ubuntu btw, it's a Linux-based partition backup utility which is run from a live CD - or not in the case of an NTFS hard drive! Grin

Just go to this web address; your number will be there and then displayed: http://www.lawrencegoetz.com/programs/ipinfo/
