Some memory sticks have a read-only slider on them (like the old floppy disk days, or the tab you could break off VHS cassettes). Is there a little sliding switch anywhere on the drive? will probably have a closed padlock icon at one end, and an unlocked padlock at the other.

DB - all suggestions thus far have been good, but here's another. Sometimes I get that message when I try to use a stick used on a Mac then a PC. I've never traced the logic to this, sometimes it works, sometimes not. However, I'd suggest as Andy D does, going back to source machine and plug it in again.
Good luck!

Do you use "Safely Remove Hardware" before you unplug it?
No, never. How do I do that? And when I plug the stick in and look up the properties for individual files, the read only box is unticked. Thanks for all the suggestions. I am off for a few days, but may look in to it all on my return.

No, never. How do I do that? Ah! You really should!! It's quite important.

Presumably you have been carrying out the regular maintenance such as defragging ... , TF? Slightly tactless in the case of Member Turfan?

By the way, to make identification of the device you want to safely remove easier, tick the "Display device components" box when you first use the facility.
Oh, and you are likely to find that any devices that are already connected when you start up your computer cannot be "safely removed". It only seems to work with hot plugged devices. If someone here knows a way round that particular 'feature' I would be glad to know of it.

Hmm, I was thinking more in terms of cure, than of prevention, Ron.
