Don B, if you've tried a new stick and still get the same problem then it must be your PC which has the problem. I'm afraid I don't know how you can easily sort it out.

You could try looking at the Device Manager (control panel/System/hardware) and checking that all the USB devices are working correctly (Universal Serial Bus controllers) - right click on each and select Properties, you should be told that the device is working properly. If not, there's a Troubleshoot button, but I've never used any of this so I'm only guessing.

Better, possibly, is to right click the stick when it's plugged in (from My Computer) and select Properties then Hardware - this tells you if the device is working properly.

Thank you, Andy, but it happens on both the laptop and the pc.  Mind you I get the impression they are in cahoots.  When one is slow, so is the other.  They both receive signals from the same wireless router.

Sorry if I'm just muddying the waters but it might be important, depending on why you want to know.

I have to set-up a pc for someone who needs secure remote access (via TCP/IP) to a network in London - the London network checks the IP address, as well as a password routine.  The pc in question is accessing the internet in Moscow via a 3G connection over a USB modem.

Most straightfoward way (I don't know if it's really simple though) is:

Start->run

type cmd in the box that opens up (or do whatever you normally do to open a command prompt)

at the command line type

ipconfig /all

and amongst various bits of info about what network card you're using and so on will be your IP address.

There are various websites that will tell you too, but I can't recall the url for one at the moment, though you could go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sandbox and make a test edit and see what IP is recorded in the edit history.

Thanks to both David and IRF Smiley

Does anyone here run, or has experience of Windows Vista?  I know it had some terrible reviews when it was launched.  Have these been ironed out now and is it preferable to Windows XP?

Depends on what you want from an O.S., Anty. There's considerable rearground action trying to persuade Microsoft to retain their support for XP for the future, particularly from professional users: for all that most of my work is done on a mac, I use XP on my parallel PC, and the occasional experience of Vista doesn't make me want to switch at all. On the other hand, the majority of domestic users seem happy enough....

I agree with Ron. XP's been around for 6.5 years and it seem to work pretty well by now so I see no reason to change to Vista.

Of course, MS have to "persuade" people to buy new software that they don't really need in order to generate income. They're doing this with Vista by giving 30/6 as a deadline after which manufacturers can no longer offer XP preinstalled on new computers. However Dell are selling Vista PCs with the option to "downgrade" to XP:

"Anyone who buys a copy of either the Business or Ultimate versions of Vista is entitled to also get Windows XP Professional. Each computer manufacturer decides whether, or how, to implement this. Until now, consumers who exercised their right to get XP Professional when they purchased Vista got a computer with Vista preinstalled and an XP image CD in the box (an image CD is very different from a retail Windows CD). Dell's innovation? It will do the XP image installation for you. It may not sound like much, but the net result is that the computer leaves the factory with Windows XP Professional on it, rather than Vista. Microsoft can't be happy about this, though a cynic would note that even though Dell computers leave the factory with XP on them, Microsoft can tally it as a sale for Vista."

However domestic consumers will presumably have no such choice, so if you're buying a new PC Anty you'll end up with Vista.

Thanks for that information Andy.  I'm not thinking of buying new, this one is about 2 1/2 years old with XP but my sister who is thinking of buying (she's still on Windows 98!) found that all new machines (from PC World, etc.) seemed to have Vista apart from some Acers she found on Amazon.  So it looks like she'll have to buy quite quickly in order to get XP on one.

I'm lucky enough to have Vista on my shiny new laptop (which probably has something to do with the fact that it doesn't get used nearly as much as the old XP box with the letters almost worn off the keyboard).
My main grumble with Vista is that I haven't tracked down all the superfluous bloatware that comes with it yet.
The automatic backup only backs up to internal hard disk storage, or the internet and since I don't have a fast connection, the internet is not an option.
The user account control dialog (sic) pops up frequently; at first it was annoying but now I more or less expect it. Rather than risk weakening security (ahem!) I leave it active.
Oh, and when I first started it up, it recommended that I back up the operating system before first use, which meant fifteen of my precious CD-ROMs got gobbled up.

I think Bill Gates said something about "Wow!" moments.  Roll Eyes

I have Vista and have niggly problems which i have already posted about i.e. Unable to get favouites to work on many sites (solved this by using Ace) - Not being able to play dvds without it stopping every few minutes for my computer protection (will solve this by buying cheap dvd player). Whether this all the fault of Vista or not im not sure but sometimes long for the trouble free (although much slower) times of Dial Up !!!!

Microsoft have just had another go at releasing XP Service Pack 3, having pulled it last week due to an incompatibility issue. I got an automatic update notification this morning but I think I'm going to wait a bit until I install it, in case they find something else wrong with it. It's only really bringing together all the previous updates so if you've been keeping XP up to date, there should be no rush.

I just tried kitty's wheeze and I get the message "Can't defrag as this volume is read only."

That's the problem.  It didn't used to be read only.  I never told it to be read only.  I don't want it to be read only.  How can I get it back to normal?

Don B - at the risk of repeating something you may have already tried, have you had a go at David's tip? If your memory stick is physically switched to "read only" this would, I think, account for all the problems you've been having (and it's the sort of thing that can easily get switched on or off without one realising - rubbing against the lining of a pocket, eg). If it's switched to "read only" (or locked) then just switch it back (probably best to do this with the drive not already plugged in to the computer).

Thanks, tim, for your concern, and thank you to David U for the idea.

I have stared at the memory sticks and felt them all over, and their surfaces are smooth as a baby's bottom.  I can see no slide.

Sorry I didn't thank David above but I didn't want to appear to be continually complaining when I had not been able to get it to work.

Incidentally, trj, how do you hide the link to the page under text (in this case the word David's tip)?

Arses.

Incidentally, trj, how do you hide the link to the page under text (in this case the word David's tip)?

Like this (replace < and > with [ and ]):

<url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OXQclRyL78>Don Basilio</url>

It's not immediately obvious, but the best way is to highlight the text you want to show as a link, then click the 'Insert Hyperlink' button (the one that looks like a globe, above the grinning smiley). Then immediately after the first "url", and before the first closed square bracket, type = and the url you want, thus: Don Basilio. Ignore any change colour stuff - links automatically show up blue.

Hope that makes sense!
