Further to my word of caution about XP Service Pack 3 - DON'T INSTALL IT!!!!!!I've just read this: "Microsoft's service pack three (SP3) for Windows XP has caused havoc on hundreds of PCs, just hours after it was released as an automatic update. Angry customers have vented their spleen on the firm's Windows XP message board, posting complaints that include spontaneous PC reboots and system crashes after the service pack installs." For full story, see: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/05/09/windows_xp_sp3_reboots_crashes/

Yikes Andy,
I've read the blog etc regarding the issue with AMD processors. My desktop has XP and the processor is an AMD Sempron.
Often Windows does automatic updates on my desktop, will the SP3 pack have installed itself or is it only installed if you go to a Windows Updates site and get it??

I'm sure Andy will be back before long but in the meantime: in my PC days at least there were three settings for Windows updates: do nothing; download automatically but ask before installing; install automatically. Might be worth a check in the update manager...

If you're still up and running John then you're either OK with SP3 or you haven't installed it. As far as I can see, no-one has found the definite cause of this problem yet - it might be nothing to do with AMD processors. (btw AMD are my initials - no relation!)
I've got the Windows updater set to notify me of an update but not to install until I say so - I get a little yellow shield towards the right end of the task bar. I've got an Intel processor but I'm going to wait to see what happens - as I said earlier, SP3 just seems to be consolidating all previous updates so there isn't any urgency to install it for security reasons.

I installed my updates at work, but then I can call upon Dr. Jules our IT consultant to sort anything out. I have not installed it at home.
Just having really frightening sudden sheet lightening and thunder storm, thought it was fireworks at first, taking Andy's advice logging off and unplugging modem.

I had that setting in the past, so I've now returned to it for the time being (now Norton has thrown a wobbler and has the FIX NOW! warning wanting me to do Automatic Updates, but I can ignore that for now) I had my desktop serviced with a new motherboard and some tweeks a few weeks back so now I really want a trouble free period, of at least 3 years

Thanks Andy, I not only unplugged the computer but the modem and my phone line and then my mobile went berserk so switched that off too. I have never, ever, been in such an awful storm. I saw a lightening bolt hit the other side of the valley, and then the forked lightening and the torrential rain started. I was watching it through the kitchen window and actually shrieked!! Hysterical female that I am. No damage seems to have been done, thanks to your sound advice.

Hope you're OK now Anna It's quiet here in Midlands we only had a strong shower about 9.00am just as I was setting off to daughter's to cut their new turf lawn by hand (not ready for lawnmover). I'm so knackered (arms aching) I've stayed in.

Thanks John, OK now, it has passed but never such a frightening storm I have ever experienced nor such torrents of rain. Just glad I disconnected everything and sat there shaking and quaking in the dark by the light of a solitary candle. Is this God's punishment for Pentecostal Sunday now being Pond Clearing Sunday? It reminded me of those old films about The Blitz. What were them things that light up the sky? Well, it was like them. Were they Barrage Balloons? I dunno.

....(now Norton has thrown a wobbler and has the FIX NOW! warning wanting me to do Automatic Updates, but I can ignore that for now).... This will be Gill Bates revenge on the money making viruses written by the employees of the antvirus providers who have cynically attacked and infected his thaumaturgical software which has changed our lives for the better (and it serves us bloody well right as far as I'm concerned). It seems to me that Gill is determined to destroy these antivirus parasites using an antidote called Windows Vista and furthermore I'll tell you this, er ....

News from Mort the Computerless.
BT have now fixed her phone socket for the second time (evidently the wrong screws were used but they still charged her £250).
Her BT home hub has now sprung into life (cf the wrong screws in the socket)
Her computer's hard drive is corrupted and has lightning damage but the Russians of Highgate say they can extract the information contained on it and transfer it to a cd.
She wonders, does she go along with that and hope the hard drive does not fail again or should she get a new machine? The Russians have recommended from Misco a Q128552, HP GRO25ET#ABU for £295 which is XP and thankfully not Vista.
She asks. Does anyone here recommend a reasonably low cost tower (her monitor seems OK) or should she persevere with her old corrupted machine (which is an only 3 year old EMachine) but could run the risk of failure again?
She really misses everyone and wants to get on board again and sends warmest regards to all.

Erm: if the hard drive's the issue, the rest of the machine's OK and such information as can be extracted is to be put on CD (only one?), why not just add a new hard drive and transfer what can be salvaged onto that? Or am I missing something here?

Is there anyone as computer-disaster-prone as Mort on the planet?? Anty, tell her she's missed too.
