Cheers Guys, I will relay that info.  Ron, the Russians did not mention a new hard drive but muttered amonst themselves I think about cds would only be poss.

Blimey, I  am only the go-between and, if it were me, would opt for a new shiney puter!

Erm: if the hard drive's the issue, the rest of the machine's OK and such information as can be extracted is to be put on CD (only one?), why not just add a new hard drive and transfer what can be salvaged onto that? Or am I missing something here?

I would second Ron's suggestion - also, if it was possible, it might be an idea to use software such as "Transfer my PC" to get all the settings transferred ok?

But Mort is not able to, her machine is dead, it is extinct, it is as a dead parrot, outside forces are at work and charging £55 per half hour

Fair enough Anna!  Glad to hear that at least some of her PC problems are on the way to being repaired.

£55 a half hour - I'm in the wrong job (or will be from next Monday)

It's too late for Mort, but to everyone else I'll say: back up everything on your hard drive regularly.

I've just installed and run a backup application on my Ubuntu laptop - I've only had it 4 weeks so there's not much on it yet but there's still quite a bit to lose. I've got a backup program which I wrote myself on the Windows desktop and I run this about once a week to back up volatile data to an external hard drive. There's an MS backup prog supplied with XP but for some reason it's not installed - it's on the CD, you have to install it yourself - see http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/bott_03july14.mspx

Mort is still waiting for the Russians to get back to her  and will see what they say about a new hard drive and whether they have been able to extract all her information onto a disc.  Incidentally, the HP computer they tried to sell her, after looking at it on the Net, is a business one, in fact it's the one I have at work, not a multi-media home PC!!  It's a bit like the blind leading the blind knowing the level of our combined technical knowledge.  (I would put an appropriate smiley there but we are a smiley no-go area!)

As for backing up, at work we have an external hard drive on the main computer we are all networked to but backing up to cd is the simplest way isn't it for doing it at home?  I ask because I never back up, I do occasionally send things to myself at work to store them there.  Should I get an external hard drive?  Are they easy to install?

Ho Anna,
Yes, they are easy to install - I have 2 attached to this PC (one is 250 and the other 120gB).  They just connect into the USB port and require an external plug (provided with the unit).

incidentally, a cheaper alternative than buying a fully assembled unit is to buy something like an Icy Box and an internal hard drive.  Just make sure you get the correct configuration - i.e. a SATA drive for a SATA box or IDE box / IDE drive or else it will not connect properly (I did this when I assembled my one and felt a complete idiot)...One just fits inside the other, the cable connects and hey-presto, it works!

Any other questions, just ask...

(just had to defend Liszt on TOP against some people who obviously aren't aware of the quieter works...Grrrrr)

In the more recent versions of Windows, it should usually be a matter of plug and play, Anty. Very simple indeed.

Err .... Jonathan, never heard of SATA or IDE .... Why an internal hard drive?  If the computer gets hit by lightning surely that wouldn't help?  Just been looking on Amazon and I see they are not expensive.  Now, if someone could have a look there and recommend which external one I should get for the least outlay I would be grateful.  I'm on XP Home 2002 Version if that's relevent.

As used by Ron on his PC - plug and play. Easy, Anty.

Thanks for that Ron, unfortunately it uses an AC adaptor and I am rather challenged when it comes to the spare wall plugs department.   (There's a joke in there somewhere I think!)

I wonder what thoughts are on this one?

Depleted as you be, cariad, in the provision of suitable electrical outlets, I'm certain that your suggestion should prove an entirely efficacious alternative.

Ron, cariad, it's dim pwer soced as we do say down by here!  (Oh for a forbidden smiley)

If no-one comes up with a cheaper alternative from Amazon in the next few days I think I may well go with that one.

It's Mort's experience that has made me realise that all my research and writings could be wiped out instantaneously and that is really quite frightening.

P.S.  Just had a text from Mort.  She has been told a new hard drive will cost the same as a new computer  Huh  Huh  Sorry, I had to break the smiley embargo.  Is someone having a laugh/trying to rip her off!!

Anty, Mort's Russians are indubitably extracting the Mikhail. Very naughty. If only Uncle Ron were within easy distance, he'd be there like a shot, reading the riot act...
