Cue marbs and his dongle....

Indeed, marbs and his continuing saga of The Flight of the Dongle.  Coming soon to a theatre near you.

See the original Dongle thrown to the floor by a bendy-bus!!  See the replacement Dongle being rescued by a kind stranger!! and delivered tenderly to Kings Cross Lost Property Department after cruelly being left on a train through an absent minded marbs moment!!  Watch the touching scene when marbs and replacement Dongle are reunited!!  Imagine marbs' consternation when the Mumbai call centre restore the original Dongle to life and he realises he is the owner of two Dongles!!  Imagine two very emotional Dongles vying for marbs' love and affection but he only has one laptop!!!!

And as for the sequel .....

Hope Mort hasn't ordered her new computer from the Russians - we'll never see her back here again Sad

If anyone is interested in the XP SP3 problem, it now seems to be only HP AMD machines which are at risk of endlessly rebooting - or maybe not?

HP begs AMD PC owners to put XP SP3 on ice

I've got an Evesham Intel machine but I'm still holding fire on SP3.

I had a phone chat with Mort today and have advised her on a (non-Russian) source for her replacement PC. She's missing us all terribly, and can't wait to be back.

I should perhaps stop parasitising my neighbours' bandwidth when I'm at home, plus it seems to be getting less reliable <grumpy-but-also-somewhat-sheepish>.

Out of curiosity, I've just tried my laptop's wireless switch and got online using one of my neighbours' wireless set-up. However due to the fact that my firewall didn't seem to start when I did so - and also a bit of guilt about doing it Undecided - I logged off straight away.

Having read up on the reported problems with SP3, and having an Intel processor, and not using the small business stuff, I went for the update to SP3. Took ages, but no real problems, (so far).

My HP Intel at work updated to SP3 and no problems that I can see.

Have heard from Morticia.  Her latest technological woe is that her dvd/video machine has stopped working!!  The dvd tray is stuck and will not open.  I have never known anyone to have such bad luck with machines.

That's quite a common problem. Sometimes there is a little pinhole to the side of the tray into which you can push an unwound paper-clip to manually open the draw. Otherwise it's a matter of taking the lid off the player and doing what you can to manually operate the tray mechanism it from there. It might be worth Mort Googling for the model number of DVD/video player and the terms "tray" and "stuck". That's what I did when my Panasonic HDD/DVD recorder tray first got stuck. I found detailed instruction on how to resolve the situation and have now got used to sorting it in minutes. It does involve removing quite a few screws and lifting the DVD unit from the case to access its pinhole though, in the the case of my machine.

You have near enough persuaded me that I ought to have one of these things, Ron. Just before I press the Purchase button though, I take it that they are definitely a better bet (a) than those little 'Memory Stick' things that I've seen around but never investigated, and (b) than the "BT Digital Archive" service that I seem to have acquired by default with my BT Broadband package and which, ditto, I haven't been arsed to investigate yet?

Anty, those 'Memory Sticks' tend to go up to about 16GB max. The USB2 hard drives start at around 80GB and go up to over a TB (i.e. over 1024GB). BT? You are joking, aren't you?

Eh?  When would I ever use a memory stick?  I don't even know what they are  Have I ever mentioned them?  Is this reality, is this the real world?
