You have near enough persuaded me that I ought to have one of these things, Ron. Just before I press the Purchase button though, I take it that they are definitely a better bet (a) than those little 'Memory Stick' things that I've seen around but never investigated, and (b) than the "BT Digital Archive" service that I seem to have acquired by default with my BT Broadband package and which, ditto, I haven't been arsed to investigate yet?

Anty, those 'Memory Sticks' tend to go up to about 16GB max. The USB2 hard drives start at around 80GB and go up to over a TB (i.e. over 1024GB). BT? You are joking, aren't you?

Eh?  When would I ever use a memory stick?  I don't even know what they are  Have I ever mentioned them?  Is this reality, is this the real world?
...or has Bryn just mixed up George and Anty? Wink

You mean they are different people? I automatically associated the query with Anty, for some reason. Wink

[I'd get me coat and head for TOP, 'cept their server is too busy, most of the time.]

Gist of the message received and understood, with thanks, anyway. Cheesy

Yes, I am on BT Broadband <shameful embarrassment>.  I sort of drifted into it in a mindless sort of way and, given Mort's experience, I'm now far too terrified to try changing it to something else.

(I'll get me dongle.)

I've just had a look at the BT Digital Vault George Wink In fact I was able to sign up for a free 1GB, even though I'm not using BT broadband, which isn't to be sniffed at. As you're with BT, you presumably get 5GB for free. While this isn't a massive amount, so you wouldn't be able to stick all your photos/music on there - as I seem to remember the BT adverts encourage you to do - it would be a good place to store files which you would be devastated to lose if your house burnt down.

Edit: I'm not impressed, I've had 3 goes at uploading my Firefox bookmarks to the vault I created - all have failed + they were v slow (15 KB/s) before they failed. I'll forget all about it I think.

If anyone is interested in the XP SP3 problem, it now seems to be only HP AMD machines which are at risk of endlessly rebooting - or maybe not?

HP begs AMD PC owners to put XP SP3 on ice

I've got an Evesham Intel machine but I'm still holding fire on SP3.

Andy,

Just spoke to my wife's uncle in New York who described this very problem he was having now (it's the reason why he hadn't read e-mail from us). He's relieved it's nothing wrong with his computer itself, but is wondering how the fix will get installed.... when they find the fix.

He has a Compaq/XP

Both Microsoft and, to be fair, HP themselves, seem to be blaming the use of Intel specific code on AMD installations by OEMs. I would suggest Compaq has a pretty big responsibility to resolve the situation in this particular instance. I take it your wife's uncle has an AMD processor in his Compaq? If he can boot into safe mode, perhaps he could either restore the PC to its condition before the 'upgrade', or uninstall SP3.

The problem with the SP3 thing is that people can't even get into safe mode - m/cs reboot before you get there.

As to how any fix will be applied to m/cs which are already b*gg*red - who knows? They'll probably have to reinstall Windows?

Bryn,

Will that only work BEFORE the SP3 update?  Undecided

Since my own PC was on automatic windows updates I expect SP3 was downloaded onto my desktop two weeks ago, without a problem.

Is there a list of installed updates on my PC somewhere?

I have Norton Internet Security as part of a package, updated since 2005 on this desktop.

Got this message today,

Customers upgrading from NIS2006 or NIS2007:

Warning: If you currently have the Add-on Pack installed, you need to save your settings before installing Norton Internet Security 2008. If you do not save your settings first, they will be lost. Learn how >

The learn how says how, but doesn't explain enough e.g. I don't know if I have the Add-on Pack installed  Undecided

John, if you go to Control Panel and then to Add/Remove Programmes it will list everything that you have installed.

If you want a comprehensive picture of hardware/software on your computer, including all installed Windows updates, I'd recommend Belarc Advisor http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

I've looked at that Anna, it lists NIS2006 there. Nothing about the Add-on Pack, so maybe not.

Odd sort of list, doesn't say anything about Windows XP. OK, let me guess, it's not a program, it's an operating system  Roll Eyes

I'll have a look at Andy's link.

By the way my burbling speakers still burble over 1 metre away from the PC. When not playing music, if I turn up the volume knob high, they detect every mouse movement with a little buzz, and every file opening with a little hiss. Oh well, quiet music will be spoiled.

That's odd John, my list shows I have Windows SP 2 and other updates <confused emoticom>  Let us know how Andy's suggestion works, I did look at it but didn't download.
