I went ahead with the Norton NIS2008 update.

So far two odd things going on.

1. I went to go on a secure website, the professional institution where I update my 'professional development profile' (don't ask, I just have to do it) anyway I couldn't get in, IE or whatever says

There is a problem with this website's security certificate.

Contacted the institute, 'OK our side John, must be your nanny security software!   Smiley

and ipconfig says
Lease Obtained 19 May 2008 08:27:12
Lease Expires 20 May 2008 08:27:12

God knows what'll happen tomorrow at 08:27:12

That problem fixed itself overnight, phew!

2. I think Tommo is in my computer  Cheesy

the new Norton Security have a new thing called Network Map which I just clicked on out of curiosity. Apparently in my home I have a network of two devices

Desktop PC JOHN-9F37........

Generic Device THOMSON

They have slightly different IP addresses.....

BT told me that my BT HomeHub contains a router device made by Thomson.

Little bit concerned when I was googling to look into this, BTHomeHubs might be hackable....

John, my modem is a Thomson.  Or Tommo as I fondly call him  Cheesy  Why do you have concerns about hackability?

So if you Google BT Thomson router you get reports about 'hacking vulnerability to authentication bypass' (just pretending I know what it all means  Roll Eyes but I guess confidential info is vulnerable

John, you're right to be concerned, default WEP security settings for BT Home Hubs are not very good, see: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/04/14/bt_home_hub_encryption_weakness/

Just as well I have my Cyberspace Chastity Belt set to maximum then John with padlock, no Hacker is going to get past my authentication bypass!!  The very thought!  Unless, of course, they are are a Welsh Draper Mad for Love.

Waves of hate - or at least vehement frustration - in the direction of my PC, which decided yesterday morning to go into Blue Screen of Death mode whilst loading up after log-on. It will fire up in Clean-boot mode, so it's obviously picked up a nasty somewhere, though I have yet to find it, being reduced to checking off the start-up items one by one. Without the Mac (and the laptop pressed into emergency service) I'd be totally at a loss: even so, this is just a horrendous waste of time.

Hey Ron, it's not the XP SP3 thing Andy warned us about, is it? or did you rule that put before?

I'm still not clear I have the SP3 installed on my PC, the 'installed updates' list I have is confusing.

If anyone is interested in the XP SP3 problem, it now seems to be only HP AMD machines which are at risk of endlessly rebooting - or maybe not?

HP begs AMD PC owners to put XP SP3 on ice

I've got an Evesham Intel machine but I'm still holding fire on SP3.

Hope you sort it out without too much hassle/wasted time Ron.

Yesterday I was re-reading all the notes I made at the time about the various problems I had with my old desktop when it ran under Windows ME. What a dreadful bit of software ME is - however much I might grump about it, XP (with SP2 Wink) is so much better.

I find it's a good idea to jot down a few notes whenever I sort out a problem or learn how to do something - they often come in handy.

Normally a service pack is so big that you have to elect to download it, John - I'm still on SP2. It's not looking bright at the moment - but I keep all the tips on my Mac, so at least they're there and I can access more on the web as required,

I've just received this, so I'm passing it on.

Hi All, I checked with Norton Anti-Virus, and they are gearing up for this
virus!

I checked Snopes (URL above:), and it is for real!!

Get this E-mail message sent around to your contacts ASAP.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS!

You should be alert during the next few days. Do not open any message with
an attachment entitled 'POSTCARD,' regardless of who sent it to you. It is a
virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which 'burns' the whole hard disc C of
your computer.
This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in
his/her contact list. This is the reason why you need to send this e-mail to
all your contacts It is better to receive this message 25 times than to
receive the virus and open it.

If you receive a mail called' POSTCARD,' even though sent to you by a
friend, do not open it! Shut down your computer immediately.

This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by
Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by
McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This
virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital
information is kept.

Ron's right, sorry Mort.

I checked Snopes (URL here: http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/postcard.asp), and it is only sort of for real!!

See especially the note at the bottom of the page.

That said, the postcard/e-greetings virus is for real: don't ever click links contained within e-greetings card notifications.
