How much memory do you have, Anty, and what speed are you trying to burn at? (That might make a difference.)

Oh Ron.  You know I am Welsh so therefore have little inherited memory!  My computer tells me I have 60% free space and I usually burn at 8 x whatsits because Bryn told me to a long time ago.  I will acquire some new blanks on Monday and see what happens.

Yeah but that was a long time ago. Have you upgraded your computer since? I avoid the max speed but use 24x on the laptop and 32x on this PC.

I got this computer approximately 3 years ago John (it's an emachine 5210).  I always thought you had to burn at the lowest possible speed for quality reasons?

I always burn audio CDs at the slowest speed possible - fewer errors that way. You can still do an average disc in c7-8 mins which should be quick enough unless you're a

Funnily enough, when Anty posted about having problems copying CDs, I'd completely forgotten that I kept getting errors when I was doing some copying a few weeks back. I was reminded because I tried copying a disc today and got the same errors - it never gets beyond writing the TOC and the CDR just spins round. I suspected the drive but it's writing successfully to CDRWs and DVDRWs so it's probably the CDRs. They come from a 100 pack of Imation of which I've successfully used about 4/5ths.

Edit: I've just tried copying to CDR 100 in the pack (ie the last one) and it appeared to work OK but the disc is not playing properly, it keeps stopping when played in the RW drive, though it plays OK in the DVD ROM drive so it might be the drive that's faulty Sad

Apologies if this is not the correct thread, but can anyone recommend suitable software for recording an audio stream off the radio into an MP3 file?

John, can Audacity capture the BBC iPlayer stream? That is what the Total Recorder program which Anty uses will do. Total Recorder will save the resulting recording in any of a wide range of formats, according to your choice. WAV, mp3, ogg vorbis, WMA, FLAC, ... . Basically, whatever is passing through your sound card, Total Recorder can capture it. It is not alone in this feature, but does a good job and is easy to use.

Like Total Recorder, MP3MyMP3 player (name of software) can capture anything playing via the sound card. Caveat: alerts, buffering pauses, voice IMs will all become part of the recording as well.

Ah, while I have not examined the veracity of such claims in any detail, Total Recorder is supposed to be able to eliminate buffering 'pauses'. While I did originally get TR with the intention of grabbing the odd BBC iPlayer stream, I have only used it for that purpose infrequently, since the audio quality offered by the Radio 3 online is not what it might be, let us say.

Another program which looks worth investigating is "Internet Radio Recorder". Just Google for it.

Well I have used it to record iplayer; have to go into Control Panel Sounds/Audio record settings and select er... trying to remember, might be Wave (instead of Line In)

For Mac users, Audio Hijack Pro and the associated editing programme, Fission will do all you want it to, and probably more: furthermore, it's a total dream to use. I'm aware of one member here who's taken it up since I first mentioned it, since he's PMed me to say how just much he likes it, too.

On Windows I use Total Recorder, an old version of it (5.3) which enables you to record from LA in accelerated mode ie up to 4x as fast. It certainly eliminates buffering pauses.
