For Mac users, Audio Hijack Pro and the associated editing programme, Fission will do all you want it to, and probably more: furthermore, it's a total dream to use. I'm aware of one member here who's taken it up since I first mentioned it, since he's PMed me to say how just much he likes it, too.

It wasn't me, but I like this one too. It's also great on the timer for recording internet radio while away from the computer.

Talking of recording from the radio, Listen Again seems awful at the moment, very slow, so when I'm using Total Recorder's accelerated mode it's constantly buffering and hardly accelerates the overall recording speed at all. Also some recordings just end up blank. Has anyone else had any problems?

I tend to only use LA/Total Recorder to record speech programmes off R4, because of the awful quality, but sometimes it's not even tolerable for speech.

Having tried a few audio CD copies on the desktop, it looks as if it's the DVD RW drive that's playing up. I've tried using a CD lens cleaner but I don't think that's made a lot of difference. Any suggestions, other than replace it?

I'm sure you've already checked the drivers, Andy, so it probably is on its way out; laser failure the most likely scenario. Dead cheap to replace, though: you might as well get another DVD writer: it will probably cost very little more than a new reader.

I'm pretty sure you're right Ron. I think I got 3 years on-site service when I bought this machine. Since I got it in August 2005, I must look out my documentation to check that I can get a service engineer to come and replace it for nothing - but must do so before September!

Double-check your contract, Andy: laser failure may well be outwith the terms and conditions. In any case, it's a quick and easy job to replace.

I will do Ron, when I can find it! I haven't had to make use of the on-site service so far, this desktop has been very reliable. Something's got to fail sometime I suppose.

Apologies if this is not the correct thread, but can anyone recommend suitable software for recording an audio stream off the radio into an MP3 file?

Thanks for all the feedback; it has certainly given me something to thing about.

I have a confession to make.
I was using Sibelius 5 on a rather sexy iMac in Durham over the weekend.
And I actually think it has some nice things on it.
I'm not saying that I'm going to fork out for it.
I still have mixed feelings about it as a package, and haven't quite decided if I'm going to use it for the majority of my compositions in the future (actually given the fact that I'm writing fewer notes right now, the advantages to using notation software aren't quite as pressing as they were 12 months ago).
Also, I'm not sure I have the fork anyway.

While I'm thinking about it, what software do the Mac users here use to burn DVDs for use in DVD players? Or does the disc burn function in OS X create compatible DVDs anyway? (I suppose I could try it and find out, but I'm not made of blank DVDs.)

Roxio Toast here, r, though I tend to use the PC more for those kind of chores.

OK.
Whose bright idea was it to produce the new MacBook Pro without a numerical keypad?
I'm going to have to go out and buy a USB keypad (or perhaps just a USB keyboard would be cheaper/easier to find?) now. Well not now, but before I have to input any serious music.
That makes me grumpy.
Mind you, does anyone know where you can get a USB keypad?

Sounds like you've managed to register your Sib 5. then, hh.

It was really easy to register it, but just needed me to ring them rather than doing it over the internet.
All sorted now (except for the keypad thing).
(And it's Sib 3. The nice little user-friendly things that Sib 5 does - like cue-sized dynamics and tuplets - aren't enough to justify forking out)

Yeah, it's a pain. The num-lock button activates a virtual numerical keypad, but in this mode you can't type any letters, and it's only a partial number-pad in any event, so I don't really think that's of any use.  Little sucks more than trying to use Sibelius on a macbook.  Not all stand-alone number-pads will work either, I think.  You might want to google this to check.

On my last one (and on every other Mac laptop I've ever used), you could also activate the virtual keypad by holding the 'fn' key, which was really useful.
On this new one, there isn't even a virtual keypad and therefore no num-lock key (though no reference to this in the Help dialogue at all).
The only way around this (other than a USB keypad or keyboard) might be to use the 'Input menu' but I'm not convinced that this will work at all (and it's going to be a num-lock situation if it does).
