Ah well, better to be safe than sorry. When I have received these e-greetings in the past I've just deleted them because the sender is never identified. Straight in the bin.

This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by
Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by
McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This
virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital
information is kept.

Thank goodness it's nothing to worry about then Wink

Whenever I receive one of these chainmails, I usually reply to the sender, who's only trying to be helpful after all, pointing out that these sorts of things are invariably hoaxes and asking them not to forward any more to me.

Thinking about this part of the hoax mail:

Quote
If you receive a mail called' POSTCARD,' even though sent to you by a
friend, do not open it! Shut down your computer immediately.

So, what would that achieve, eh? You still have to switch the computer on again  Cheesy

A proper warning would say hit delete and empty the waste basket (or the recycle bin).

Eh?

Two and a half days after the PC decided to do its BSoD act, I've managed to get back to the point where I can gain access without having to go into safety mode or need to initiate a clean boot (touch wood/fingers crossed). There are still some strange things happening, but at least now I can access most things, and hopefully can now dive in and sort out what's upsetting it. Very glad the Mac's alongside: I've had to comb the web for some very abstruse info again.

Four and a half days later, and at last the PC seems to be back to pristine running, without having to resort to outside help except for some downloads from the net. Today has proved the biggest trial, since the anti-virus system (Norton 360) had gone AWOL and needed reloading. Could I find the disc with the product key number? Could I 'eck! Despite the fact that I'm very strict about keeping software CDs safe and all together, it wasn't to be found. The spare room was gutted, the loft was turned out, all to no avail. Then I noticed a slim clear DVD box next to the operas on the shelf above the desk where I work. I use slimline DVD boxes a lot, but not clear ones. And that was it. All day spent looking for something that was right in front of me all the time, just not in the expected packaging. Somewhat grump-worthy, though I did find some long-lost treasures as I rifled about....

That's a relief Ron. I'm sure your time could have been put to better use though. It always seems such a waste of time when you're just trying to get back to where you were the other day.

Could I ask what programmes people use for copying CDs?  I don't often do it and have used Nero but for some reason it seems to be playing up and aborting the burn process.

Are there any simple to use, freeware programmes anyone can recommend?

Anty - I use Nero or Roxio's Easy CD Creator in Windows, and Roxio Toast on the Mac. Nero's usually pretty fool-proof. We're off out fairly soon for a lunch party, but if nobody else has sorted before I get back, we'll have see if we can have a look at it for you....

I use Roxio Easy Media Creator in Windows too. However I believe that both RealPlayer and MediaMonkey will do the job, and both are free. I've used RealPlayer to burn CDs but only from files already on my hard drive so you might have to rip them first. MediaMonkey is probably similar.

Not sure what the problem is, possibly a combination of the original disc, the blank discs (which could be a dodgy batch) and my computer.

On Nero, first two attempts was 'aborted' message whilst saving.  Tried Windows Media and Real Player and they both caused the computer to shut down and restart after 4 tracks copied. <SHRIEK>

Went back to Nero and on certain tracks it said could not extract information.  Those 5 tracks were the Offertory all other Eucharist prayers and the concluding Rite and Blessing. (I think perhaps Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor has copyrighted them or else Jesus definitely doesn't want me for a sunbeam today!!)  However in burning the tracks I had managed to save it then aborted and said it couldn't write to disc (making me think the blank disc was dodgy).

So not sure what the problem is.  I have saved the tracks and when I get some new discs (have run out now) will see if they will transfer.

My advice, don't use MediaMonkey. Unexplained gaps (couple of seconds) appear in tracks sometimes, despite the notice "Burn completed successfully".

I tried Nero again with a different disc and it successfully saved the tracks, found an unused disc but couldn't burn beyond 5% when it froze so until I get some new blank discs I'm not sure what the problem is.  They are only cheapie blanks, maybe I should get some better ones (although they generally work OK)
