If you want a comprehensive picture of hardware/software on your computer, including all installed Windows updates, I'd recommend Belarc Advisor

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Anna,

Andy's link is good. Thanks Andy.

The download creates a nice list of programs, dates etc.

The Norton programs are listed under Symantec, and the Add-On Pack is not listed so I may go ahead with the NIS2008 update.

For XP the list says: Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)

and below that there's a long list of installed hotfixes under SP0, SP2 SP3, SP10 so that's confusing (for me), but looks like maybe the troublesome Service Pack 3 is not on my desktop PC?

A further communication from Mortville.  Her new computer arrives tomorrow which has XP Professional rather than XP Home which she had before.  The Russians have extracted two cds of data from her old machine.  Can she presume there will not be a conflict of interests in transferring extracted Home data to Professional?

O TF/CD see the Computers Love 'Em or Hate 'Em thread.  Mort's computer was struck by lightening, and there has been a whole soap opera about her getting a new computer and back on line.

It would be nice to hear from her again.

Her North London suburb is only a few miles from mine, and I can't imagine anything so violent happening here.  Sky is clear now, apart from a few clouds, and gently settling into night here in Stoke Newington.

But brimstone and sulphur seem far more frequent in Highgate.  (Mort has Dick Whittington literary connections.)

We are hoping she will be with us some time next week.

Whoops, this is the Computers etc thread.  Just read back, TF/CD.  Memo to self:  be very, very careful posting after a good supper.

For the benefit of those who have not seen me, that is not me.  I have more hair, but it is not so uniformly dark.

I've just followed my own advice and run Belarc Advisor, haven't done so for ages. It picked up that I'd missed one critical update from last May Shocked so I've just installed it.

John, if you go to the MS update site http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/ to find what updates are available, it will offer you Service Pack 3 if you don't already have it on your machine.

My analysis also says "Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)" but then I know I haven't installed Service Pack 3. I don't know what the SP3 in the list of hotfixes refers to, I've got a Belarc analysis from 19/9/06 before Service Pack 3 existed and that also includes the mysterious "SP3". It might mean that they're going to be included in SP3 but then what does SP10 mean Huh

I'm having some problems with my Belkin router - I wonder whether any of the computer-literate here might have any suggestions?

My old router died a couple of weeks ago and I replaced it with an identical Wireless G router.  The new one appears to work OK most of the time, but refuses to download large files - I'm chafing at the bit to get my Open Office update, and even You Tube files freeze after a minute or so.  It looks like some sort of buffering problem, and a quick Google search suggested I should download new firmware, but according to the Belkin website the firmware (for UK models) has not been updated for this model?

Any thoughts, beyond taking the new one back and replacing it with a different model?  (There's quite a lot of material on the web suggesting that Belkin routers are carp, but the old one was fine)

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

I've had problems with Belkin routers, too, pw: their software seems to be overly complex. Linksys seem to be the easiest to use, with excellent online backup, though at the moment I'm using Netgear stuff - which I've also had trouble with previously, though this model is fine.

I went ahead with the Norton NIS2008 update.

So far two odd things going on.

1. I went to go on a secure website, the professional institution where I update my 'professional development profile' (don't ask, I just have to do it) anyway I couldn't get in, IE or whatever says

There is a problem with this website's security certificate.

Contacted the institute, 'OK our side John, must be your nanny security software!   Smiley

That IS what the lady wrote, including the smiley.

So I look at NIS and their Phishing program, can't see where to turn the darn thing off  Angry

Second odd thing, this is a hoot

2. I think Tommo is in my computer  Cheesy

the new Norton Security have a new thing called Network Map which I just clicked on out of curiosity. Apparently in my home I have a network of two devices

Desktop PC JOHN-9F37........

Generic Device THOMSON

They have slightly different IP addresses.....

Generic device?? I looked at my ipconfig and the 'device' IP is just one digit away from the number listed against Default Gateway, DHCP Server, DNS Servers whatever they are and underneath that list it says

Lease Obtained 19 May 2008 08:27:12
Lease Expires 20 May 2008 08:27:12

Don't know if Tommo knows, but God knows what'll happen tomorrow at 08:27:12

 Cheesy

Oh bugler bugler billhooks!! Mr Stanislav arrived today to transfer the data from my old machine onto the new one. He's done a pretty good job - all my documents are there (phew) and the first thing I saw was a Ron pic as my screen saver. hooray!  BUT ... my address book has gone <sob> Empty. He has to come back tomorrow because he didn't have the disc to install Word. Does anyone have any thoughts on my Address Book crisis? Can peeps be recovered? I notice that my Bookmarks are all intact <grateful for small mercies emoticon>

Hi Mort - how horrible. The horse may have bolted, but you can get 2gb worth of back up (docs, address book, whatever) for free online here: http://mozy.com/. Might be future peace of mind.

Thanks for your thoughts yesterday re. the empty <sob> address book. Stanislav the Man is coming back this afternoon to install Word so, in the spirit of ridiculous optimism, I am hoping he may have a suggestion or two. I just don't understand how everything else emerged intact except the address book Huh Still, digits crossed. Otherwise it's going to be a lengthy trawl through messages to extract the addresses. There doesn't seem to be the option that I had previously to Add to my Address Book. Heavy sigh.
