Mobile Me, the new format and protocol for the dotMac mail service has finally appeared, so I'll be able to work through my messages as time permits (I have to go out very soon). I can see at least three notifications from members, one of which I've already answered on thread and by PM: I'll answer the other two on my return (probably early this evening).

Two things.  George posted here (but I cannot find his post) about AVG Free Anti-Virus no longer being supported and free and you had to pay.  I have been using AVG 7.5 for ages and got the same messages, however if you look carefully at the small print at the end of the page you can still get AVG 8 gratis, which I have just done.

Secondly, is anyone having trouble with BBC iplayer since the new version has been launched?  I had no problem before (I don't download just watch in streaming)  Since the new version I find it keeps stopping and the grey loading circle appears, so it's very stop/start and last weekend wouldn't play at all.  I am with Virgin and I now find that they are "traffic throttling" - I think I remembered that term rightly.  So, fellow Virgin customers, is it that causing the problem or is anyone else having problems with iplayer generally?

Ants, I haven't experienced any probs with the 'new' iPlayer but I used to get the problem that you are describing. That seems to have cleared up with the new format. Don't like the new layout though. I find it more difficult to find what I'm looking for. What is it with the Beeb and messy, cluttered layouts? Angry

Well my puter does not seem to like the new format or else it is the fault of Vergin' on the Ridiculous again!!  And now, I was going to reply to Martle with another photo of Portia who is the identical twin to his posting of Miss Martlepuss and the buglering scanner is not working!  It tells me to unplug all USB connections, reconnect and restart.  <sigh>

I read recently about disputes between ISPs and the BBC over who is going to pay to accommodate all the extra traffic that the iPlayer is generating - perhaps this is Virgin saying that it's not going to be them.

Download rates do vary enormously, with most ISPs, depending on the time of day - ie they only have X available so each connection only gets X/n where n is the number of people online in your area. (that's not meant to be an accurate formula btw Cheesy)

The beta version of the iPlayer does seem to have far better bit rates for radio than the old Listen Again had.

I don't understand what the fuss is about myself.  Consumers are paying broadband providers for access.  That they're actually using it now, I don't see why the extra cost shouldn't be just forwarded to the consumers by increasing the cost of net-usage generally instead of them lobbying for a general toll (except that it might get them more money).

On the other hand, Andy, iPlayer usage (with large files of material, much of which has already been available via air or cable transmission) has a disproportionate effect on the amount of bandwidth being consumed, and thus the speed available to subscribers, which is in itself an issue already raising potentially serious repercussions for the ISPs.

It's Virgin's doing. They began trials of bandwidth throttling a year ago and have been stealthlily rolling it out across the country since then, increasing the amount of throttling and also the hours in which they are doing it. They give you the exact figures here:

I think it's criminal, changing the terms of the service they provide after you sign up for their service, particularly since they are an unchallenged monopoly (having bought up every other cable provider in the country -- don't we have laws about that sort of thing?  Angry ).

I also checked snopes.com, this morning, and it is for real!!

Hah! That would explain why I had such problems with iPlayer when I was with Virgin. Scheisters! Btw, wouldn't it be more appropriate for their link to read 'upyours', instead of 'allyours' ?  Angry

Hmm, that'll teach me to speak too soon. My BBC Homepage has now disappeared altogether. When I clicked on it from 'Favourites' I got a white page with 'Accessibility links' including Skip to content, Display options and Take the tour. When I tried to get the basic Homepage format back, it wouldn't have it. I tried going via google but got the same white page. Does this mean that Aunty has fallen over again? Has anyone else had problems. Blimey, I only wanted to check on the weather! Roll Eyes
