It looks like Microsoft is finally going to release XP Service Pack 3 as an automatic update, see:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/08/microsoft_xp_sp3_smb_server/

There's also a major error in DNS which MS (and others) have been correcting secretly for fear that phishers would find out about the vulnerability, see:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7496735.stm

(that article explains what DNS is, if you don't know)

I've just installed the MS monthly update which I assume corrects this. I suggest everyone else do the same.

Edit: having just restarted my desktop, I now find that all websites time out - aaarrrgh! Could this be an MS cockup in the patch? I hope not. I should hold fire with the patch if you haven't installed it yet. I've had to come onto the laptop to get online.

That is vaguely interesting but we really doubt whether it (the "major flaw") is anything "newly discovered." The operation of the D.N.S. system is widely known and well understood; there are umpteen books describing its every detail. Much more interesting though is the link to the article by Clive James on the second page: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/7296856.stm

Whether or not it's a "major flaw", installing the MS patch appears to have buglered up access to the internet on my desktop. I'm doing a system restore to try to get back to where I was Angry

Update 1110: phew, the restore has worked, I'm back on the desktop again. I don't know whether the MS patch caused the problem - but I got timeouts whatever site I tried to visit immediately after restarting my PC having installed it. Looks very suspicious to me. Anyone else had any problems? - there still seem to be lots of you here!

Just found this at the bottom of the BBC article about the MS patch:

Some readers have contacted the BBC saying that applying Microsoft patch had caused problems with their PC. However, a Microsoft spokesman said its call centre staff had not seen any calls about such problems.

So it's not just me!

Aha, I've found that the MS DNS patch won't work with ZoneAlarm - which I use.

see: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/09/ms_dns_patch_zonealarm_woes/

so if you use ZoneAlarm, don't apply the patch. You do wonder about MS's testing, ZoneAlarm must be one of the most popular firewalls around Huh

Hardly surprising: for the past 18 months, I have regularly sent error reports when "switching user" to my account on the shared computer in the house. Initially, the reports requested feedback, but after sending a few dozen feedbacks I realized none of them were actually being read.

I have come across a problem with the laptop that me and my wife use. Its a Toshiba model. Sometimes, when its on the initial opening sequence, eg has the Toshiba thingey, 'leading innovators etc...', then it locks. Usually, just the once You cant switch the lt off or nothing. I then switch it on again and everything back to normal, it goes onto to the rest of the sequence for loading on.

Could anyone explain why this happens, and if they have any hints.

Sorry bbm, no idea what's wrong.

There's a new version of ZoneAlarm available which corrects the problem I posted about yesterday, so it's safe to apply the latest MS patches once you've upgraded.

People, I have decided to invest in a laptop PC. Not a Mac, a PC. So, any recommendations? My needs are modest: Sibelius/ IE/ word stuff, and a decent screen resolution. Reliability, fair speed. Don't mind paying a bit more for peace of mind on all that.
A friend has recommended an IBM ThinkPad. Any good?
Many thanks in advance!  Smiley

We have two Advent laptops, very reliable and lightweight (in weight that is) from PCWorld. £400 each with Vista. For a bit more you can get much higher specs. I don't use Sibelius but I'm sure it's system requirements will be met in the Advents. PCWorld also offer TechGuys support.

Im some places you can still pick them up with XP rather than Vista: I'd strongly advise avoiding the latter if you possibly can. None of the Sibelius packages make huge demands on computers per se, though RAM's an issue if you're using any of the sound packages - 2GB absolute minimum, Mart. I'll try and sort some possibilities over the next day or so.....

A rare Mac grump: they're changing the whole dotMac e-mail system this month to a new format and protocol. It appears that it should be happening today, but in the way of so many of these launches, it's not gone according to plan: no Mac mail has been available here since some time overnight - so apologies to anyone who's been trying to reach me via that rather than the PM system here.

I'm right there with you in frustration-land, Ron. It's been nearly 26 hours now since my email has worked, and I don't do so well being cut off like that... Angry
