Anty, of course imaginative veggie cooking is better but sometimes I need something quick that the kids will enjoy and I always try to combine anything "cheating" like Quorn with fresh veg or salad. It's hard to feel enthusiastic about cooking totally from scratch when you've just got home absolutely exhausted and the kids are all hungry. Also, they're not into anything particularly spicy or herby though they do like garlicy food.

The other thing is, I don't want them to feel they're missing out when non-veggie friends are tucking into ch*ck*n n*gg*ts, h*t d*gs etc* and now that there are excellent veggie versions of these sorts of things. Of course, when they were very young I wasn't working and they had super-duper veggie meals without anything remotely resembling pretend meat!

* I don't mean at our house - I wouldn't cook meat - I mean their friends can eat them. By the way, mine are old enough to make up their own minds and they've ALL decided they want to continue to be veggie, even when out and about.  Smiley

Hi Antheil,

I guess that would depend on what side of the pond you were on! I'm on the small island off the coast of France. I've no idea what Southern means, so I eat mine on a hot tin roof.

Cool - a carnivore room, I could lurk like David Attenborough and observe their post-kill habits. On second thoughts old Hollywood sounds more interesting.

Anty, you say "why try to substitute meat"?  For many people it is a halfway house I think.  After years of being used to the texture of meat, I think quorn acts as a bridge of sorts.  Like M-J says, when all the other children are tucking into chicken nuggets, sausages and the like, it is possible to have an alternative.  Never underestimate peer pressure - unfortunately I will admit.

I find quorn very useful indeed in a family situation.  You're right of course, there are many interesting veggie alternatives available out there, especially ethnic ones.  However, it isn't always easy to get those down a child! (Or their friends).

Because it is nice, and convenient Anna, when others are having a curry for example it is simpler to be able to pop some meat substitute into a separate pan with the same sauce etc rather than starting a completely separate meal.
And.. for those who don't particularly like cooking ( dare I even suggest such a thing?) it is actually very nice.

I haven't eaten meat for well over 40 years so a change is always welcome

I appreciate your points MabelJane, Milly and A.  I guess my problem is that the one time I had TVP my stomach decided it definitely wasn't for me!!  As to quorn and tofu I really don't like them at all - so it's a personal thing for me.  I do admit to occasionally  buying things like ready made chickpea burgers though when I can't be bothered to start from scratch (there are some really nice ones).  Also of course generally I am just cooking for myself which makes a big difference.

I'm not totally vegetarian of course, about 75% I should think.  I had roast lamb yesterday which will be finished off today and then for the rest of the week it'll be veggie meals I think.

There's an omnivore who's very partial to Quorn right here - although I preferred the original recipe before they played around with it, and I'd rather have the chunks than the mince.

This is of course the difference if I may say so Aunty.. I couldn't possibly eat lamb. It is like someone asking if I would like to eat my husband's arm... no thanks! I haven't touched anything that has had an independent life for , as I say, over 40 years... so quorn is a nice option!

Anty, you're not vegetarian! Grin Roll Eyes Omnivores can eat meat-free meals but it doesn't make them a percentage vegetarian. If I started to eat meat again even just occasionally I would no longer describe myself as a vegetarian. (I hate the sight and smell of fish so never ate it anyway.) But I have no intention of eating anything that walked, swam or flew *(or gambolled - saw some cute lambs the other day).
