Does not the current setter's response to Member Dish's attempted answer veer so far - and so indulgently - away from any one of the five permitted 'message types' as to render him liable to a docking of points?

No, it seems a dollop of waffle is allowed as long as one of those five functions is indeed fulfilled. Having said that, I find the partitioning of this topic quite absurd.

Any gropings for my second puzzle?!

I find the scoring rules quite interesting.  I guess the 100 points to setter when the work is guessed correctly is so that a setter cannot set such a ridiculously hard work that no one ever gets it, and thus rack up a lot of points.  Sadly, people may just ignore a setter completely, even for the most easy of clues - thereby meaning the setter gets no points (except through his or her capacity as a member guessing others snatches).

Anyway, the whoel system is not nearly complicated enough......

I think the -75 for a crap guess is too harsh.  I reckon we should all have a 'free parking' card per snatch which we can play before a guess, making us immune from failure.  Of course, if you absolutely know the work and don't need the protection before you take the plunge, you can save up for the next snatch, and use two 'free parkings'.  ( Shocked)

And in true 'It's a Knockout' style, I believe we should be able to play a joker.  If I play a joker and get the snatch right, then I get the setter's time bonuses instead of hm or her.

Whey up Chafers,

I can't get you link - sendspace says it will take 52 minutes to download, then just sits there sucking its thumb.  Can you do it via Our Syd's method?  I got that no problem.

Otherwise how am I going to give you a ridiculous answer?

Brilliant!  In another subtle change to the scoring mechanism, we could have Stuart Hall and Terry Wogan trying to collate scores from judging panels all over Europe.  Results could be based on vagueness of resemblance of the guessed piece to the actual snatch, getting the instruments right, or the size of your boobies.  Of course, it would be obligatory for the judge in Germany to Award the Guesser from Turkey a dozen eggs.

I find the scoring rules quite interesting.  I guess the 100 points to setter when the work is guessed correctly . . .

But there are not 100 points to the setter when the work is guessed correctly, unless we made a typing error. A setter gets 100 points as soon as he sets a puzzle. Then when and if the work is guessed correctly a quite different 100 points go to the solver. In addition to those there are bonus points to the solver for a rapid solution, and bonus points to the setter for the lack of a rapid solution.

Mr. Thompson's remaining suggestions about "parking," "jokers," and so on are most interesting and could well enhance the competition. What do other members think?

Actually M. Dish, I will have to think about that........

Syd,

I am obviously confused.  Please could you just note who gets what points when.

e.g.

Setter
100 points for sticking a puzzle on.
Points for each hour taken before answer guessed.

Guesser
-75 for an incorrect guess.

etc.

And what do points make?

Hm. So it's kind of in canon and it's a reed trio. Hm.

Might have to sleep on this one.

I think 100 points for each quiz question is silly. I can post 10 quiz questions, waste my time, and garner 1000 unnecessary points. But since I don't care about the points system, I'll refrain from arguing.
