This is beyond me. Maybe I should read the rules.

Surely an important element of the scoring has been inadvertently omitted or overlooked by Member Grew? It seems only fair to me that if a Member gets the right answer (and thereby scores 100 points), a further point should be added for each period of 15 mins that elapses between the posting of the answer and confirmation that it is in fact correct!

In this regard, I note that a Member placed an answer at around 1 am, and that this has still not been responded to.....

Andy, "prizes" was the answer I was after.  Award yourself 100 points!  (or is that prizes?)

Syd, thanks.  Very clear.  I don't believe setters should get points just for setting.  They should get points for setting if the snatch is correctly identified.  And more like 50 points.

And the scoring system will inherently mean setters set near pumpkins, when there are fewer guessers and hence more chance the puzzle will last longer.  Expect to log on each morning to find a flurry of new snatches.

Sample 2: An American pupil of Nadia Boulanger?
No comment from me (wrong thread) -- but I will venture it's a good guess. Could have been written by Alexander, Allanbrook, Amlin, Anderson, Bassett, Bauer...(etc)

Ah, you saw through my cunning ploy to appear cleverer than I am. Grin

That's a good point, Tomsky. I was thinking of stumping up a snatch right now, but clearly it's in my interests to keep it dry and wait till nearer pumpkins.

Does any one know any sites where these short MP3s may be referenced by a direct link? Again this if possible would encourage timid participants would not it.

Try www.mediamax.com - you can sign up for free and have 25 GB of space for sharing mp3 files. You can share them in various ways, including posting a URL link for others to link to from a forum such as this.

Let us assure Mr. Iron that his helpful suggestion has not gone unnoticed; we have been battling with and attempting to master mediamax on and off over the past twenty-four hours.

And another thing: we have already discovered have we not that there are no orchestral conductors among the active members, because had there been they would we think have been sure to have known snatch 1!

What do points mean?! ...

Yes...

POINTS mean PRIZES!

But what "prizes" have we been promised for this caper?

But for now setters need to be encouraged. Only one - Mr. Dish - has actually ventured. If that rate does not improve we may need to double setters' points. Are there simple but helpful hints somewhere about how to prepare upload and link to mp3 or wav files?

It occurs to us and we are happy to share this thought with other Members that a specie of liberation is perhaps to be to be found in the act of throwing off all interest in the accretion or want of 'points' and to bathe playfully, free, unashamed and naked of such considerations, in the pleasure garden of delight that Dr Grew has afforded us. We ourselves intend so to disport ourselves, unencumbered, as we dance betwixt the fountains of folly and wisdom, ignorance and knowledge.

In that reckless spirit we wonder whether Snatch No 1 might be one of The Russians, Mr Rimski-Corssocough perhaps?

Member Martle has seen into the inner yearnings of our mind with alarming accuracy.

How unfortunate we are that so little of this sort of thing goes on outside the confines of Brighton and Hove these days.
