it is time to signal my intention to 'retire' from this thread

Congratulations Mr I.  Sad to see you go, even though I suspect Mr W will now be rapidly lapping me instead of you.

Well I can't find anyone who wrote variations on Mahler's Adagietto for puzzle 464, but a bit of Googling shows how often that one movement is still played in isolation in concerts.

And just finding a piano concerto in A flat for puzzle 459 is difficult enough, assuming that's the key of the whole piece. It could be in D flat...

Every one except the good Mr. Thompson seems to be ignoring the obvious ....Mahler Symphony No.5 Adagietto

Well, the bad Mr Daniel feels impelled to say that he was not ignoring it, as he is under the impression that this symphony -

I will have a guess at Valentin Silvestrov's 6th Symphony for puzzle 464.

quotes the Mahler Adagietto in its own slow movt.

Despite this, he has accepted the overall wrongness of his suggestion and has mulled quietly and unproductively over what he might alternatively suggest for a greater felicitousness of outcome.

Yes sorry Mr. Daniel we did not know that. May we suggest however that it might be profitable to concentrate on the word "variations" in our clue?

Changes to the Rules

1) A Member who solves a puzzle before a clue is given will now gain 800 points plus any time bonus (instead of 180 plus any time bonus)

2) A Member who solves a puzzle after a clue is given will now gain 400 points (instead of 180)

3) Members may now post up to ten puzzles at the same time (instead of three).

(The three changes above will take effect immediately.)

4) Puzzles will now expire after 48 hours (instead of 5 days).

(This change will apply to all new puzzles from number 473 on.)

The object of these four modifications is to make the competition livelier to encourage new participants and perhaps even to lure back one or two of the doubters and apostates.

Google and I have 464 down as possibly:

Jan Klusak
Variations on a Theme by Gustav Mahler (1962)

We are curious to know how that answer might have come about through Googling. Having tried every possible combination of the words variation, theme, mahler and orchestral - that is an entirely new name to us. We even followed Mr Grew's advice to Google for "variations on a theme of x", with Mahler substituted for x (and one or two other tries), as well as "variations on a theme by x" and far from the solution leaping out, it remained nowhere to be seen, unless it was on something like the tenth page.

It popped up for me right away! (what a strange piece it must be)
