Yes, but on the other side of the world does not he?
I turn my world over every night. It's so uncomfortable to sleep on the same side all the time.

If someone could recommend a quick way to (a) convert something from a CD into an mp3 file, (b) extract a one-minute passage from it, I'd be very grateful. This is the bit I can't cope with; the actual uploading of the file to shared webspace I think I could manage without too much trouble.

Also, should I do (a) or (b) first? I know how to get a one-minute snippet from a track in Nero, but I only know how to burn it to another CD. I can't seem to save it direct to computer in readiness for the mp3 conversion. I've tried the other way round, and got as far as converting a whole CD track to an mp3 using some software (freeware?) I downloaded, but again, I couldn't then find a way to cut it down to one minute or less and save the resulting snippet.

I'm sure everyone's got their own method depending on what software they've got. I use RealPlayer to produce a WAV of the track on my hard drive, then edit using Audacity which lets you select a section, add fade in/fade out and then save as an mp3.

PS Audacity is open-source and hence free, I've never used Nero so I don't know if it will do the biz.

I downloaded a free thing called WavePad from NCH (?) an Australian company.  Bloody Brilliant (Cobber)!

Do a google - should be OK.

AndyD - sorry, Puzzle 29 was my first one and I saved it as a different format.  I'll redo it as an MP3 when I get back to home base.

t_i_n, I thought all you young blades new all about such stuff. You can use Blade as your front end, but I prefer Razorlame. Download Lame (free) and Razorlame (also free) and follow the instructions to set up Razorlame as the graphic user interface for Lame. You can either use the resulting set-up to encode a whole track to mp3, then edit out the section you want, using mp3DirectCut (another free program), or edit using, say, the audio editor which comes with the full version of Nero, and then use Razorlame (or Nero, IIRC*) to make your short mp3. What could be easier?

I only have the OEM version of Nero, so am not sure about whether or not the full version has its own mp3 encoder.

No idea, IGI. It sounds very English folksongy. But surely not Britten...
Is that you playing your clarinet, most charmingly?  Smiley

Yes, very pastoral, but not English.

Not me performing, but it is one of the few pieces I could do justice to, with practice, having been a Grade V piece* I performed.  Smiley

I hope THIS is the right type of file for an mp3 version of Puzzle 29.

Any guesses?

That mp3 works fine, Tommo. Is it French? Satie?

Sorry IGI.  That's No and hence, No.  (Shh, don't tell Syd what goes on here).

Clue:  Not best known as a composer....

Mmmm, Baz and I have both gone for Tolstoy's Waltz, but having listened to it on a 2004 BIS disc, it doesn't sound it. Nor does it appear to be by Griboyedov, Odoyevsky or Balanchine.  Sad
