Now this thing about the bāton is a curious point.

In French a bāton is really more a staff of some kind while a baguette is a stick of the dimensions associated with orchestral direction. Nowadays a conductor's stick is called a baguette in French. As is a chopstick, for example. The bāton de direction is basically what a drum-major has. Or what Lully had. But the only thing actually under the bāton of Lully was his foot and we all know what happened there...

Reminds me of a student seminar many years ago on Satie's Parade, in which the student revealed that this seriously wacky composer had instructed the percussionist to play with bread rolls . . .

I think that No.70 could be by either Bridge or York Bowen.

Pace Mr Grew, I don't think that I am giving too much away in suggesting that Mr Inquisitor's proposal is not by any means a proposal 'too far'.

Madame Antheil - a lot of gentlemen are waiting for you!

Madame Antheil would like to thank our Esteemed Quiz Moderator for the gladsome news that Members of the opposite gender await my ghost-like apparitions on the Test thread.

Unfortunately, at work, I cannot access SendShare at all, only RapidShare will work, hence I am unable to participate in a great number of the Puzzles.

What a shame, Anty, and Puzzle 87 would be so obvious of solution to you. Can you access YouSendIt? I don't really like RapidShare very much.

I don't have a problem with SendShare at home, just this machine at work although it uses RealPlayer (anyway, shouldn't be playing games so maybe it's just as well!)  I think YouSendIt is OK.

I have added a YouSendIt link to the original message re. Puzzle 87.

Let's try an official attempt at Puzzle 70: York Bowen's Reverie in B major, Op. 86?

Unfortunately IGI you are - on this occasion - incorrect (sorry). But I'll put something on the discussion thread.

"Mr Iron"   Sad

Of the two composers you previously suggested, you have chosen unwisely. Try the other one and come up with something seasonal.

#88 is not a work which fall within my previous experience, and I feel I would be happier were I but able to say the same tomorrow, but it's too late now. What's done is done.

Bryn, I am not sure why you think I may know Puzzle 87  Huh  I don't think it's ringing all bells with me.

Puzzle 85, initially I thought Rachmaninoff, Mr. Grew's latest (88) sounds like film music?

Concentrate on the last two chords of 87, Anty, and try not to be put off by the [mis]use of HIPP. Wink

Well the performers involved in that particular recording of the work have played other works by the same composer in a Lunchtime Concert from Edinburgh, which was broadcast on Radio 3, if that helps at all.
