Baz, I was just about to correct my guess for 89 to 'Auf stillem Waldespfad' (the third time of asking!) when you beat me to ! Cheesy

85 sounds like Rachmannineff but is probably not;

93 we still think is Rachmannineff but still don't know what;

Correct nationality for No.85, Mr Grew and Rachmaninov is indeed the composer you seek for No.93.

I had no idea that Strauss had such a thing about Schumann - where did it all go wrong? Wink

IGI, which recording of Má vlast was that? I have Kubelík's last recording (Czech PO), but find Mackerras's even more exciting. Of the six works that make up the cycle, my favourites (Šárka, Tábor and Blaník) seem to be the ones that get least performed! Embarrassed

It's a good thing I did then, because The Führer would have taken marks away from you for illegally editing a message posted on the Test thread. Cheesy

Clues for puzzle 79..

Not Elgar Mr Grew, the composer was born 17 years later than him. This music is not typical of the composer's style nor is it associated with my preferences by others on the board. Nationality - he was born a fair way from England.

That would be Mr Norrington's recording with the London Classical Players which they recorded in 1996 shortly after they performed it at the Prague Spring Festival. I much prefer it to Mr Levine's VPO account. I do feel I should have a Kubelik version, but which one?

IGI, 105 is NOT the final Act of Gotterdammerung, right?! It sounds like one of those hilarious Schnitke pieces by the end of the snatch...

No. That would be quite against the rules, Mr Martle, would it not?  Tongue

Probably his last one, IGI, with the Czech PO on Supraphon.  Like the Norrington and Mackerras, it was recorded on 12 May at the opening concert of the Prague Spring Festival (in this case, 1990 - the first Festival following the Velvet Revolution, and Kubelík's homecoming).

I ought to renew my acquaintance with that Norrington recording.

Thanks for that; I shall keep my eyes open for the Supraphon recording. I also have the LSO Live one, but largely felt it was a bit too broad and lacking some excitement.

Hmm, that pretty much sums up my view of Davis in general these days. (Though not his Falstaff.)

Subject to the calculations of Mr Grew, I believe congratulations may be in order, Mr Inquisitor!

Why, thank you, Mr Martle!

A few clues about my remaining puzzles...

85 - A composer who is famous for his orchestral and operatic music, although his operas are rarely performed in the UK

105 - My money would be on Ron spotting this one!

It's Shostakovitch 15, isn't it?  . . . the Wagner quote . . .

Good Lord!
