Mr Grew,

I take it that more than one clue may be given for each snatch?

Indeed - up to five "clue messages" per puzzle.

Many thanks for the clarification.

Please inform is what penalties apply if more than 5 clues per snatch are posted on the test thread.

Also, please comment on how points will be awarded if a snatch is identified after an illegal 6th (or greater ordinal) clue on the test thread.

Many thanks

With all respect, I don't think that a points scoring system and restriction on clues is a good idea. Why not just allow clues to be put on the test thread without being penalized for being off topic?

For example, if I say that the composer is a 19th-century German, does that count as one clue or two? If someone says it's Beethoven's 5th and I say it's not Beethoven at all, does that count as a clue?

No.180's really bugging me! It sounds very Russian, but Tony has stated it's from Scandinavia; it sounds too 'old' for Sibelius and is unlike any Grieg I know. Could it be by Franz Berwald?

Not Berwald, though it's by someone also from Stockholm, albeit later than Berwald. It's a ballet suite.

180 is, I believe, from Hugo Alfvén's "Midsommarvaka"

Yes! The Prodigal Son has returned. Well done - it's the prelude, actually.

Well, I never. May I ask, Tony, which recording this is? I see there's a Naxos one, which may be worth considering. I only have Alfvén's Swedish Rhapsodies and have wondered about his other works, especially his symphonies.

It is a Naxos recording but it's an odd situation. There is an Alfven CD of The Prodigal Son, coupled with his Symphony 2. But while it claims to contain the suite from the ballet, it does not include the Prelude, which is what 180 was. I have no idea why because there would have been room on the CD for it. The Prelude appears on The Sven-Goran Erikkson Classical Collection from Naxos (I know, I know) - a set of three sampler CDs which probably isn't in the catalogue any more. But in the booklet it says that the Prelude is taken from that CD (catalogue no. 8.555072), and yet it isn't. I've looked to see if it appears on, say, a compilation of favourite Swedish tracks, but I can't find it. It's a shame because it's played rather well and there's a very nice tune in the central section. When the first tune appears again (puzzle 180) at the end it gets pulled about chromatically, which is good fun.

One could always try this:

180 was track 1 of CD 3.

Thanks, Tony - I've just seen it here for a little over £1 for the 3CD set! I have a dim memory of a Gramophone review which praised the 'team selection' for the 3rd 'Scandinavian' disc.

Not enough clues for number 151 Mr. Watson; it has now expired and you - not the first to do so mind - have lost your time bonus! It is always best to give a ridiculously simple clue after four and a half days.

Please reveal the solution on the competition thread. . . .

Something keeps nagging me that 151 is a Tchaikovsky Ballet.  My brain keeps saying it isn't.  I await Mr Watson's denoument.

It's on the test thread now, Mr 1780. Hary Janos by Kodaly.
