I suggest that 165 is Villa-Lobos... his Piano Concerto No.5?

This is difficult to believe. This work used to be played at the Proms just about every year, a few decades ago. No, it is not by Villa-Lobos. He may have studied in Paris but he definitely came from the other side of the Pond.

Given your clues then, Bryn, I'm going for the Ireland piano concerto.

Indeed, Tony. Now go and find a recording of it, preferably that by Colin Horsley, and give it a good listen. The most obvious influence is Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto, but it is essentially English in character, I feel. I used the Lyrita recording made by Eric Parkin for the clip, but the Horsley is even more idiomatic, I feel.

Phew, at last. I don't have a recording of the Ireland but I do like Prokofiev's piano concertos so I'll look out for it.

Puzzle 167...

Is it Sonata in G for mandolin and continuo, by Addiego Guerra?

Sorry Baz, Only just seen this on a check through. No, not Guerra, and not a sonata.

May we remind Mr. Baziron that his puzzle 142 will expire at seven o'clock this evening, and his puzzle 145 at nine o'clock to-morrow morning? If he wishes to retain his (considerable) bonus and were we he we would he should now think about some heavy hinting.

What prodigious strides upward have of late been performed by two or three members of the modernist camp!

Several setters have fallen into the habit of at once demanding further information from successful solvers: "which movement?" "who is conducting?" and the like. May we suggest that this sort of hitherto tolerated thing might nevertheless be better placed in the general discussion thread? The second reply from the solver can usually be treated as his or her joyful cry, but any subsequent (second) confirmation from the setter is strictly speaking off topic.

We do not suppose puzzle 171 by any chance to be Erica Havnadair's renowned Minuet in B?

Indeed not: Mr Grew has identified the name of the performer, I believe, but not the composer, who was Mr John Field.

Well, the work in question is, overall, designated as being in B flat. The extract is from a movement marked "Tempo di menuetto", but otherwise I would advise that cheats never prosper. Wink

Let's try the right thread.

However I do submit that puzzle 142 is from the Norwegian Suite by Frederick Delius.

Having listened to no.171 I realise that attributing it to John Field was rather foolish. It sounds to me more like it might be by J C Bach.

Now that, Mr Barrett, is exactly RIGHT. Smiley
