Then if my previous guess of In the Penal Colony was as wild as it seemed I'll have one last fling at Satyagraha before I turn in.

Oops, For 178, I will go for Riegger's 5th, which is much better known.

Sorry, it's not that, even. In fact we understood Riegger like Brahms to have written only four symphonies and three string quartets, but then again we may be labouring under a misapprehension.

Ah, but Brahms wrote five. He just left the orchestration of one of them to Schoenberg. Turns out it is the Fourth I have a recording of, and with that dating form 1956, I just guessed he might have managed a fifth before he kicked the bucket five years later. I suppose we have to make do with the Music for Orchestra as a substitute for a Fifth Symphony.

Oh come on, Ollie, Satyagraha has an orchestral score. No, and neither is it "In the Penal Colony". That, Zappa did much better, anyway. Wink

Well anyway it is not the Music for Orchestra either . . .

I've never heard a note of his music before, but an intensive five second search on wikipedia threw up the composer Arthur Reed and his five symphonies. Could it be his (hazarding wildly) third symphony?

[edit] Actually it's Alfred Reed but I doubt that changes things really...[/edit]

And Tommo's nodded off, leaving the maddeningly familiar 197 hanging: those harmonies have a Finzi-esque tone to them, and my memory wants to put a solo instrument  in there with the strings. The Clarinet Concerto?

Would it indeed? Well if somebody, care I not who, would care to venture which, if any of the 5 Dances, (which are, after all a collection, rather than a single work, and are for two quite different forms of instrumentation), they are putting forward as a solution to the Puzzle, i will be happy to confirm or deny. However, since nobody has so far been so bold as to name a specific work ...

So, 195 is Brahms, Sextet no.1 in Bb op.18, first movement.

Points (positive ones) to Mr Barrett for his entirely accurate response.  Have a celebration!
