Is 197 John Ireland's Concertino Pastorale, the second movement 'Threnody'?

Third clue to 174: It is surprising that no one knew this straight off; it is one of the composer's purplest patches! Clever Members have identified the Suk Scherzo, the Liszt Mazeppa, the Diabelli Variations, Howells - even - we still do not understand how - the Andriessen something or other - but not this!

We have already by citing something attributed to Schoenberg indicated the key. We have already by asking members to listen to the violas indicated the nature of the ensemble. Now we can reveal that the extract comes from the development section of the first movement. What more can we say? Perhaps the year of composition: 1787.

-oOo-

Third clue to 178: We know that the composer of this symphony - his name begins with 'R' - lived in the States of America, and that it sounds pretty gritty. Let us now further reveal that he poor man met his Maker almost three years ago now, after eighty-six years of productive life (if one is able to ignore the "jazz").

Marks to Mr Inquisitor!  One of my favourite snatches of all time.

Go on, Celebrate!

And this Glass thing... it isn't one of the pieces I know so my guess would be one of Dance 1-5.

Would it indeed? Well if somebody, care I not who, would care to venture which, if any of the 5 Dances, (which are, after all a collection, rather than a single work, and are for two quite different forms of instrumentation), they are putting forward as a solution to the Puzzle, i will be happy to confirm or deny. However, since nobody has so far been so bold as to name a specific work ...

I think you know what tends to happen under these circumstances Wink

I propose Dance no. 1.

Re: 174.

I cannot believe this hasn't been noted before, but is it Mozart's G Minor String Quintet of 1787?

Well that would make him George Rochberg, so let's guess at Symphony No.2

174 can only in this case be the Mozart C major quintet KV 515.

Unfortunately it has been mooted before - in error - by Mr. Sudden in message 1169.

No one (except Mr. Hinton) seems to have understood the significance of our clue in message 1073 - the statement attributed to Schoenberg!

That's the one Mr. Sudden! It is among Mozart's purplest passages would not Members agree? Schoenberg is reputed to have said that there is plenty of good music still to be written in the key of C major - but since Mr. Hinton says he cannot find where he said it we have been meaning to have a quick look at the Harmonielehre as we suspect it is somewhere in there. But it is seven hundred pages of German and we have not yet had the opportunity.

For our hurrah message we take the liberty of hanging our head in shame. We had noted Member Grew's Schoenberg comment when first it appeared but had failed to register it in our obtuseness as belonging to this snatch. Thus did his Schoenberg reminder fall upon stony ground. We are grateful that this quiz unlike life itself does offer the occasional second chance.

So a discreet hurrah this time.
