208 is not, I'm afraid, Alan Bush's 1st Symphony.

I'll take a wild stab at this - Luciano Berio - Sequenza ? Strictly speaking we ought to ask for a single one of the fourteen works by Berio which go by that title... and in fact we shall since the Member will gain extra points thereby. I knew you would ask that!! And I'm not sure. What about Sequenza IXa for clarinet? It's not that I'm afraid.

Well let's try his Overture "Festal Day" then.

Oh dear, I'm not very good at identifying different wind instruments, doesn't sound like an oboe so let's go for XII, bassoon

219 is also not that.
We feel obliged to proffer a further clue: the work is for solo instrument with ensemble accompaniment and is in three movements.
(This does rather rule out the Sequenze entirely but since positive points accrue to erroneous guesses Madame Antheil should not feel short-changed.)

219 is of course Kya for clarinet and ensemble by Giacinto Scelsi.
I expect to be able to listen to a few more this evening. Can I request that in the meantime Members refrain from posting any correct answers?

What happened to Berio then? You didn't tell me I was totally wrong N.B. Note to our Esteemed Quiz Moderator Mr. Grew. This reply is not off-topic, but if I had known it was not Berio then I would not have spent the last couple of hours frantically googling an Italian I know nothing about.

Further clues to Both composers were English! No 208 sounds like Alan Bush to me - let's try Symphony no. 1 in C (for starters). Would Puzzle 208 be John Foulds - April?

No.208 is indeed John Foulds' April - England, written in 1926. Well done, and 180 points to Mme Antheil!

That 208 is Foulds' April - England and 209 is Shostakovich's Symphony No.2 October, should be clue enough, but an additional clue to No.210 is that the composer was born in 1883 in Streatham.

Hurrah! I have got one right - Foulds! Would 210 be Bax - November Woods?
