IGI,
You are thinking along the right lines, but completely wrong in execution!
Ah, foiled again! How about Brahms' 2nd String Sextet for 298 then?

You were supposed to say Fanfare for the Common Man, but you're right. Again!

Wild shot here: is 308 Colin Matthews' orchestral arrangement of Beethoven's Five Variations on 'Rule, Britannia!

Rule Britannia is there, of course, but your shot is too wild this time!

I'll try another German then - Wagner's Rule Britannia Overture.

Ah. I remember which recording you have of the Bridge now...
So, is 298 Eugene Goossens' Phantasy Sextet?

Yes Indeed - Goosens Phantasy Sextet. A terrific work, so please investigate if you don't know it.

Hurrah! I forgot that you had that Chandos recording - I went for the Raphael Ensemble on Hyperion for the Bridge. I have an old cassette somewhere of Goossens orchestral music, but don't recall having heard any of his chamber works.
Third clue for 281: we know it's a Ukrainian conductor/composer. The work has mythological connections.

308 is certainly Wagner's Rule Britannia Overture. From message 1891. Another one down, Mr IGI!

It looks as though further clues are in order for puzzle 303: the particular part of the West Midlands involved was Coventry and the work came out in 1907.
We are interested in exploring the dividing line between the excessively familiar repertoire and the outrageously obscure non-repertoire. We are trying to find that is puzzles which while familiar cannot at once be named but can after an interval of several hours' feeling one ought to know eventually be solved without additional clues.

OK, I'll have a stab then but I have a feeling I have been lured on to the rocks with this guess: Gliere: The Sirens
