Changes to the Rules

1) A Member who solves a puzzle before a clue is given will now gain 800 points plus any time bonus (instead of 180 plus any time bonus)

2) A Member who solves a puzzle after a clue is given will now gain 400 points (instead of 180)

3) Members may now post up to ten puzzles at the same time (instead of three).

(The three changes above will take effect immediately.)

4) Puzzles will now expire after 48 hours (instead of 5 days).

(This change will apply to all new puzzles posted after this message.)

The purpose of these four modifications is to make the competition livelier, to encourage new participants, and perhaps even to tempt back one or two of the doubters and apostates.

Puzzle 459 has been giving Members a lot of trouble! If we are not mistaken there have so far been no less than seven incorrect guesses at it:

  Mahler Symphony 5 (Mr. Thompson)
Rubinstein 1st Piano Concerto (Mr. Jonathan)
  Taneyev Piano Concerto (Madame Antheil)
Rheinberger Piano Concerto in A flat (Mr. Baziron)
Tcherepnin Piano Concerto 1 (Mr. Watson)
Liszt Piano Concerto 2 (Mr. Watson)
  Chaminade Concert Piece (Mr. Baziron)

So let us now provide a second clue. Its Russian composer taught Rachmanninoff, Scryabine, and Glière. One of his most successful works is his first Piano Trio, in D minor. We have rightly said that the puzzle sounds more like Chopin than anything Russian, but let us finish this clue with an extract from a later movement of the same work, which sounds much more Russian, and wherein we hear also his characteristic use of quintuple time - a bad habit for which Tchaicoffski reproached him!

Arensky Piano Concerto in F Minor?

Tommo

Correct Mr. Thompson! You are the first Member to earn 400 points under the new rules. The work is Arensky's opus 2, dating from 1882. That theme from the first movement certainly lodges in the mind does not it.

This will have to be a guess: is puzzle 466 the Harp Concerto of 1938 by Glière?

And Mr Grew, you are the second member to win 400 points under the new rules!  Congratulations, Gliere Harp Concerto it is.  A wonderful work - part of the standard repertoire for Harp I believe, but not so commonly heard in our concert halls as it should be.

A clue for 467.

The composer was a composer mainly of operas.
