Ha! Puzzle 100 - the ending of Šárka (the third symphonic poem of Smetana's Má vlast).

Is correct, Mr Opilec!  Cheesy

Sounds remarkably like a portion from Wagner's Tristan und Isolde overture!

It may well do, but that is an incorrect answer, I'm afraid, Mr Iron.

Mme A’s No.79 is almost certainly Schoenberg’s early String Quartet in D from 1897 (3rd movement Variations)

Hurrah! I must admit that I needed the clues posted earlier this morning to help spot that one....surely a snatch Mr Grew will have enjoyed, no?

Anyway, official celebration time as, by my calculations, the 10,000 point mark should have been reached and I can retire 'not out'! This is a wonderful way of wasting time and there are a number of composers I need to investigate further, not least Frank Bridge's chamber music and the CPE Bach Magnificat, but for now I must crack on with some work!

I shall check up on progress on Puzzles 85, 93 and 105 later on... Wink

Oh cease thy singing lovely one! - the fourth of Rachmannineff's Six Songs opus 4 (1893) - that we mean to say is the answer to puzzle 93 which we finally managed to track down. What a beautiful melody!

Isn't it beautiful? Yes, op.4, no.4: Ne poj, krasavitsa pri mne (in Russian); one of my favourite Rachmaninov songs.  Smiley

105 - It's Shostakovitch 15, isn't it? I don't remember the Wagner quote being that long, though!

It is Shostakovich's 15th Symphony, Mr Martle, the opening of the final movment in Mr Barshai's recording.

Thanks to Mr. I's hint and a recording we managed to fish out we can confirm that number 85 is indeed Rimsci-Corsacoff's 1883 Piano Concerto, opus 30. The quoted passage does not as might be thought come at the beginning but only after five minutes or so.

This puzzle did have the advantage of forcing us to sample the starts of Medtner's three concertos, which sounded rather more sophisticated than the Rimsci-Corsacoff, and to which we intend to listen quite carefully quite soon.
