Lovely down here by the sea too, Mort. Very fresh, very clear and very sunny. I anticipate the usual weekend hoards.

I hope all Brighton residents get a portion.

Bloke on the organic meat stall in the Farmers' Market here today said it was still raining when he left Suffolk this morning and it has been raining all week.

I've just been on Hampstead Heath, where it felt like a genuine summer's day. Only marred by the sight of a greyhound chasing - and killing - a squirrel while its owner looked on impassively.

I'm glad I wasn't there, Strina. I would have wanted to thump, verbally, if not physically, the dog owner. I know, nature red in tooth and claw etc, but there is such a problem with dogs off the lead on the Heath, attacking anything that moves. Actually it's not the dogs, it's the owners or the paid dog 'walkers' with more dogs than they can control. Grrr. Sorry, I should take this to the Grump Room.

*Eru is panting* Time for the ice-cubes. Ventured out for a walk earlier, flies everywhere. But still the paths were muddy, there was one stage when I was hanging on to branches at the side of the path to stop myself falling over

I've posted elsewhere about the car park at Uffmoor Wood near me being closed until the end of this month because dog owners refuse to obey all the signs about keeping their dogs on leads and the animals have been getting into the neighbouring fields and killing lambs. I know it's the owners' fault but that doesn't stop me hating the dogs Very hot here today, I'm getting quite drippy

I was sitting on a felled tree trunk relishing the warm breeze in a relatively quiet part of the heath, when suddenly this dog came along chasing a squirrel. It tried to get up a tree but the dog was too quick. The poor victim squeaked horribly. Meanwhile the dog's owner was strolling behind, and just said to the dog, "Take that away from here" with no other action. I just watched the whole thing with my jaw hanging down, too stunned to speak.
Yes, nature red in tooth and claw and all that - but a pet dog - particularly one living in a densely populated city - is not nature and shouldn't be allowed to run rampant like that.
(I'm watching the Dog Whisperer right now - does anyone else here know that programme?)

This will not win me any friends, but you won't find me shedding any tears for a grey squirrel. But I agree that if it's willing and able to do that to a squirrel...
