When my mother was first offered olives, when she was a student in France in the 1920s, she thought they were prunes. You can imagine the shock. She did get to like them though, in the end.

Edit to add picture of prune-like olives:

The decades-old, immovable and hugely frustrating blind spot in the panoply of martle munchies, as I think I mentioned to Mort in Brighton where they were kindly supplied by the pub, is these:

...any colour, any degree or not of marinading, any stuffing. How many times have I seen something as appetising-looking as this at a party,

and thought, YES! THIS time I'll like 'em! And one minute later found myself spitting them out into a napkin? Not fair!  Sad
I'm exactly the same, martle, if it's any comfort.

Well, apart from the 'decades-old' bit ... Wink Cheesy

...after chewing the cud with a writer pal and starting a project, some unexpectedly good gorganzola, brussels pate and sourdough from mr s****by. it's the sort of store that most people wander into mildly intoxicated and the juxtaposition of goods seems to reflect this. i was i must say shocked to see risotto in a tub described as 'simple'. they who know not of the alchemy chez anty.

I would like a biscuit now.
Would someone be kind enough to fetch one?

I know we've covered roasted nuts. But how about roasted seeds? I just love having a bowl of these strategically placed in the house where I can grab a handful as I pass by.

Off topic I know.  I was approached by a tramp a week or so ago (sorry don't know pc word we are supposed to use) and after a discourse about Doctors versus disease and conditions and them not knowing the difference he asked me for money.  I gave him £2, all I had in change, and he said 'Oh good, I can buy a packet of sunflower seeds!'

Yes, thought I.  I may be green but do I look like a cabbage?  Have i just got off the boat?  Bluddy cider, innit you spending it on?

As my bus pulled out he reappeared, joyously waving a pack of sunflower seeds from our local Organic shop.

That taught me a lesson and made me feel humble and I hope I don't pre-judge others so much in the future.

Sorry, but that experience made such an impression on me and I know I have related it to two members of the MB off air.  Boring.

And seeds are good of course

..and if I may add a recall I think I know who this gentleman was, an ex-client of mine from a hostel in the shires.

Dunno marble, could be, but in his well spokeness and articulation there was a hint, slight, occasional Scouse accent in the vowels.  I imagine you deal with many men, wild of beard, hair and eyes.  I think he was about 36.

I have in fact been looking out for him, but no recent sightings.
