I wonder how much raised cholesterol has anything at all to do with outside influence?

I had mine checked last January.  I eat quite a high fat diet because I have butter, cream, eggs and chocolate etc.  They asked me if my life was stressful so after much consideration ( Roll Eyes) I said yes.  They asked if there was any heart disease in the family and up the paternal line the answer was yes.  By this time the nurse was looking a bit pensive - but I had the test and when the results came back, my cholesterol was 2.8.

So I reckon it must be all about how your own body/metabolism/whatever copes with it all.

Breakfast for me is the same as with Mary I think.  Two large mugs of tea, one to even get me out of bed.  Then while I do the child's breakfast - which consists every morning of a bowl of fresh chopped strawberries and bananas, followed by scrambled egg/bacon, a couple of Scotch pancakes, a Thomas the Tank fromage frais, plus a small carton of apple juice and a multi-vitamin pill  Grin - I have another mug of tea. When I've dropped him off at school I might have porridge or boiled egg and toast, but more often than not I don't really bother eating till lunchtime.  I had a cooked breakfast this morning in Debenhams but that's very unusual indeed.

Yes, cholesterol is a mystery. Mine's about 5.7 - 6, and I don't eat much fat.

I hate avocados, so at least I don't have to worry about them! Probably more people will die from Food Worry than high cholesterol Smiley.

I LOVE avocados!  I thought the type of fat they contained was the one that was ok re. cholesterol.  Huh  I know they're high fat but I assumed not the "bad" sort.  Am I wrong then?

Not that I care because they're obviously not doing me much harm - but I'd be interested to know.....

I wonder  whether martle's middle-eastern emporium which doubles as a wholefood store is the same one I use - Taj in Western Road?

It most certainly is, PW! It's quite wonderful, isn't it?  Smiley

Mort, MAKE time!

It is wonderful indeed - large range of fresh fruit and veg, great bundles of fresh herbs, and an amazing range of oils, spices, sauces, pulses, etc all at very reasonable prices.  I bought my tagine there too.

Oh, it was just that once, at a local veggie take-out, they had these gigantic jaffa-class cakes.  Like: the size of a saucer, with a monstrous disk-shaped bulge in the middle: the orange wassit must have been almost a centimetre thick.  Wasn't exactly lovely.

Jaffa cakes are gorgeous if they're kept in the 'fridge.  Very low fat too.  Very high sugar content of course but it depends what sort of diet you're on, whether that bothers you or not.  I'm on the "A" diet. Namely, A jaffa cake, A bar of chocolate, A doughnut....etc., etc.

Gosh! Someone save me a bar stool at the Coach and doofers while I raid the Taj! Don't let my seat at The Dome get nicked either! Grin

Yes, and have you tried their Deli, PW? The best moussaka I've had. And great bhajis, samosas, pakoras etc. And fresh tobouleh. And the halal meat counter does fab lamb and spicy sausages!

Milly, originally when there was the big cholesterol scare and eggs, butter etc., were forbidden, avocados were included in the baddies list, then they were excluded.  I love them and if you scoop some out and mash it up it makes a lovely face pack (because of the high fat content) but a bit scary answering the front door with a green face (unless you are Martle of course)!  Never tried it but you can now get avocado oil for cooking with.

I have bought myself a pack of Weetabix to keep at work and I will endeavour to have brekkie when I get there, probably with an added chopped banana.  It is bad to miss what is the most important meal of the day because brekkie kickstarts your metabolism.

I'm now munching a (Fairtrade) chocolate brownie and slurping a cup of tea. Dinner is cooking/reheating in the next room. I want to sleep but I'm going out tonight.

I forgot the deli - I've never tried the moussaka but I'm at working at home tomorrow (trying to finish a paper against an ominously advancing deadline) and I see an excuse for a lunch-time trip into town coming on ...

I love avocados halved, the stone removed (stick a knife blade in it and twist), and covered with mayo plus a generous sprinkling of chilli powder. Sure that must be pretty high fat but I don't eat them often.

Doesn't the taste of the avocado get swamped by the mayo and chilli powder?

I usually eat avocados au naturel as they have such a delicate buttery taste (just scooped out of the shell) but if they are in a salad then perhaps a drizzle of light citrusy dressing.

When in doubt, wash.
