I only have access to Beebs 1 and 2, so when I recently discovered that I could view programmes from 3 and 4 via iPlayer I was rather pleased. However, for the last week the service seems to have been very patchy - it plays for 5-10 seconds and pauses for up to 15 seconds. Most frustrating.

Has anyone else experienced problems with the service?

Sounds like a classic case of network congestion, Mort, but your question suggests that you've not yet investigated Freeview - unless you have a signal issue, that should surely be a move to consider now; the simplest boxes can be picked up pretty cheaply, and will give you several more useful stations (and a few that you'll certainly never want to use!)

Oh yes - like you, I have had huge buffering problems (which may be partly caused by my router, which doesn't like Radio Player much either).  I've just about given up on iPlayer.

No problems here, got to work early and just watched the latest episode of Gavin & Stacey.   Cheesy
I think Ron's right, congestion seems to be the answer and maybe you should get Freeview (we are not in a Freeview area)

I don't have a problem at home either but when it was first launched there were glitches.

Like Ants, I am not in a Freeview area which is why iPlayer seemed like such a good idea. Sigh. I suppose that if, as the papers would have us believe, everyone is now piling onto iPlayer to catch up with Doctor Who and Eastenders then it could be a tad crowded out there ...

In which case I apologise, Mort, though it seems to smack somewhat of a lack of forward planning that such a (presumably) densely populated area should still be without a Freeview signal. Mind you, come to think of it, we have a similar problem here, although the population is nothing like as dense as that of Norf Lunnon (in a strictly bodies per hectare sense, you understand. Wink)

I was invited by the Beeb to help trial the iPlayer back in the late summer and find it very good. Rather than watch 'live' on the internet, however, I use the Download Manager to download the programme to my pc. Then I can watch it without 'buffering' problems. You can keep programmes on your pc for up to about four weeks, I think, but once you've started to watch one, it will only stay available on your pc for 7 days. Download times can vary - for some half programmes, they'll take about half an hour ot download, but some can take a lot longer - I suppose it depends on the 'traffic' and what else your computer is up to.

Ron, it's the particular bit of Norf Lunnun that I'm in. At the top of the hill everything is tickety boo. Us lot down 'ere at the bottom of the hill are on the C List as far as reception for anything goes. Terrestrial is pretty carp - snowy picture and NICAM that regularly throws a hissy fit. Mobile reception is not much better  Sad

IGI, I was invited to join the iplayer trial but in the end I didn't because I was worried about the peer to peer aspect and the problems it seemed to be causing (reading the message boards and the technical queries.

I still don't download but just watch via streaming.

Mort, you can pay £150 to Sky and get FreeSat (a dish and a box).  You don't have to enter into a monthly package.  Perhaps you could look at this?

Which indeed is what's in use here: there's supposed to be a new FreeSat service starting soon - well, actually last month - run by the Beeb and ITV, too.

I had a look at their Message Boards a few days ago. Not quite as depressing as TOP, but close. No iPlayer boffins respond to questions or pleas for help. No surprises there then ...

I have viewed via streaming, it suited my purpose. I'm a bit wary about downloading in case my computer gets clogged up, although I suppose if it disappears after 7 days (the programme, not the computer Shocked) then I may give it a try.

Ants, someone suggested that I opt for the cheapest Sky package, have it for a year and then cancel. Silly though it may seem, I am reluctant to put any of my pennies into Rupert's already weighted pockets Angry

Mort, it seems the most basic Sky package is £16 a month - far better to shell out a one-off £150.  The new BBC/ITV Freesat have not announced costs yet, you might hang on and see if they are lower than Sky FreeSat?

I am still wary of downloading because once you switch the computer on others are stealing your bandwidth it seems!

I note that all the BBC message boards are down again. I wonder if all those people using iPlayer have overloaded the system? Wink
