But there are no pipes at all - just strings stretched across a soundboard.

Well, may be it does not look like an organ, but we had a movable chamber organ when they were renovating cathedral organ. Your picture reminds me in a little way of that organ.
In one concert the organ player was conducting and playing the instrument (he was playing with his back to the audience).
What is on that picture anyway?, Baziron?

It's supposed to be a picture of Pythagoras demonstrating the harmonic relationships of different frequencies upon a "monochord" (and monochords usually - funnily enough - had more than one string!).

Actually, I am inclined to agree with A - it does look rather more like Father Christmas showing something to the kids in Harrods!

Perhaps I'll change the picky after all! We'll see.
