"Penny for the Guy" they used to say! But the use of the definite article betrays their complete ignorance of the existence of anybody actually called "Guy".
Now I was under the impression that this was uttered when collecting funds for the construction of an effigy of the said Fawkes (that being 'the Guy') for the purpose of incinerating it.

Was I mistaken about this as about so much else?

Partly. The funds were in fact earmarked for the purchase of small colourfully explosive devices, the effigy having already been constructed and wheeled  around in a perambulator or similar conveyance while the proud constructors uttered said cries.

Quite so.

Although, more often the effigy lies in mute contemplation of the accumulating funds, presumably unaware of his fiery fate. The funds, meanwhile, have been known in the past (in a place called martleasia) to have been spent on rather a lot of sherbert dabs.

ask anybody on the streets of GB exactly why they make all this din and light up the skies on November 5th and they look at you as though you are stupid!

You've conducted a survey, I take it.

And indeed he adopted the name Guido when a mercenary in the service of Spain, did he not.

The survey was indeed undertaken by myself, over a period of  25 years, outside New Cross station during the last two weeks of each successive occurrence of the month of October (sometimes even extending into November). Not a single one of the "penny-for-the-Guy" brigade ever managed to explain to me why they were asking me for the pennies, despite my insistence (on each day I passed them) that they would receive no contribution from me until they could. On one occasion I gave them a hint: "What happened in 1605 that concerned gunpowder?". But no! They never received anything from me.

Didn't realise Nessie took holidays there!

Sorry - off topic. Unless 9 out of 10 cats prefer Love Hearts?

We saw a lovely fluffy brown cat this evening - "Look at that chocolate-covered cat" I said - and then I realised what I'd said!  Cheesy

Cheesy Cheesy

My cat was behaving VERY badly this morning.  He came in noisily at 5.30am and announced it was raining by miowing several times downstairs, then continuing to miow all the way upstairs, jumping on the pillow next to me and miowing at my face. I played asleep until he settled down, waited a while and then sat up to fuss him.

As if this sort of attempt at "training" ever gets you anywhere....  Roll Eyes
