ask anybody on the streets of GB exactly why they make all this din and light up the skies on November 5th and they look at you as though you are stupid!
You've conducted a survey, I take it.
And indeed he adopted the name
Guido when a mercenary in the service of Spain, did he not.
The survey was indeed undertaken by myself, over a period of 25 years, outside New Cross station during the last two weeks of each successive occurrence of the month of October (sometimes even extending into November). Not a single one of the "penny-for-the-Guy" brigade ever managed to explain to me
why they were asking me for the pennies, despite my insistence (on each day I passed them) that they would receive no contribution from me until they could. On one occasion I gave them a hint: "What happened in 1605 that concerned gunpowder?". But no! They never received anything from me.
