See that old-ish building at the far end of the row of buildings in Ron's last photo? That's Alexandra Hall, where my Mum spent a year at Uni during WW2. It's still owned by Aber Uni, I think, despite the campus having moved up the hill to the north of the town since then. Funny thing is, she went to Uni College London, from Wrexham, to start with, blissfully happy to be escaping Wales. Then the Blitz meant an evacuation to... Aber! I took her back there two years ago - first time she'd been there in 60 years!

Antheil: So I came out of the pub; and there was my bike. GONE! And anyway, who's coat is this jacket?

Correct, t_i_n.

Perhaps I was unwittingly influenced by the Spanish town with the vintage bull-ring.

Talking of Aber......

Thanks for Aber, Ron. As you may have read before when I was reminiscing with tp, I spent a very happy 5 years living there.
See that old-ish building at the far end of the row of buildings in Ron's last photo? That's Alexandra Hall, where my Mum spent a year at Uni during WW2. It's still owned by Aber Uni, I think, despite the campus having moved up the hill to the north of the town since then. Hi martle, we had all our G&S rehearsals in the basement of Alex so I was very fond of going there. It's a magnificent building. A few years ago it was empty as it was structurally unsafe and I was worried that it would be demolished but I was happy to see on my last visit there, 20 months ago, that it had been restored and was due to open its doors to students again. There's no longer a Music department in Aber  Sad but I believe the G&S is still going.

The Abba-ite on the right is a woman, right??   Shocked Shocked

Anyway, MJ, I was at Alex slightly more recently than you and it looks fantastic now! Yes, converted for student accomodation, very comfortable-looking. What a delightful town it now is.

This website here:
http://www.aberystwythguide.org.uk/history/to1920.shtml
has some fascinating photos and historical facts.
I particularly like the outrageous claims in this ad for Aberystwyth from 1901

Well praise the Lord and pass the parsnips! MY BIN HAS ARRIVED!!!  I declare the rest of today a Public Holiday. Let the people rejoice, let there be feasting and dancing in the streets, even unto the distant hills Grin Grin
