Sorry to change the subject (and I do like that photo particularly, I've never seen one quite like it) but I'm bursting briefly into this room to say that, after a meeting in Southwark this morning, I thought I'd loiter behind Waterloo Station to see if Gramex was really still there, and it was! and they had, let me see now, Harnoncourt's Haydn Paris Symphonies, a double CD of some PMD stuff I haven't heard for years, and Ensemble Intercontemporain doing Kurtág, and a teeming chaos of other stuff of course, but time and finances were limited.

It is very heartening to have found that there's at least one aspect of London life which hasn't gone downhill since I was living here previously.

Got my better camera back from getting repaired today (it's been away since mid-August, in 2 trips) and it seems to be OK now, so I'm happy  Smiley

When checking whether the dead area in the image had gone, I spotted another one that also used to be there but which I hadn't spotted before (they're only 2 pixels square so not always that obvious). This means that lots of my more recent pictures have two corrections to be made to them.  Sad

Funny you should mention the Gimp (GNU Image Manipulation Program), Ron, I was having a look at it a few weeks ago but haven't got round to trying it out so I've just downloaded it. It's open source which appeals to me. Plus there's a cute logo.

Thank you for the music ...

I like Gimp. It may not be as easy to use (hahaha!) as some of the commercial programs, but it is probably as well-equipped. And as Andy D points out, not tied to a proprietary format, or costly tech support.

No, I'm not a complete idiot. I'm only a halfwit. In fact I'm actually a catfish.

There are some forms of lens distortion which are easier to sort with Gimp than Photoshop, but like all software, the learning curve starts with a rocket trajectory (even though it's as nothing compared to 3D CAD: my brain feels like it's knotted itself into a mobius loop....

I'd venture to suggest that far from going downhill, Gramex is better than ever, r, (even if they did manage to give me the wrong bag last time I was there).

Nice photos Ron et al. You DO know there IS a 'Photographs' thread. Let me know if you'd like them moved.

Thanks, John, I'm aware of the photos thread, but I've become rather used to dropping shots in here to bring a little happiness!

This shows just how unlike the Chilterns the location of the beechwood really is. Taken from Kirkbuddo, handheld with a 300mm lens, you can see over the little dip where the beeches are, across Strathmore and down Glen Prosen and the ridge which separates it from Glen Clova to the Cairngorms looming in the distance. I'm pretty sure that the two highest points in the distance are Mayar and Driesh, munroes both (mountains more than 3000 feet tall i.e.), about twelve miles distant as the corbie flies, but a deal further by the narrow winding roads. What's also evident is that there's not all that much woodland, and that what there is tends to be conifer plantation rather than deciduous areas. Beyond Strathmore, there's not that many trees at all.

You have band practice during half term? That would be unheard of where I live. There are a number of amateur choral groups, an amateur dramatics society and an operatic society as well as the orchestra I play in and they all follow the school terms - no rehearsals during the holidays, even half term, which I know some people whose lives aren't ruled by these things find tiresome.

We have our band practices right through the year almost. Evcn most of the summer holidays!! We have a fortnight break over christmas and a week in the summer holidays!!

This is breath taking picture. It made me very happy with the world.
For some reason I am happier in the second half of the day now. It is difficult to say why.

t-p,

Maybe you're not a morning person: or perhaps you were, but are finding that it takes a little longer for your system to sort itself out nowadays. But we have to keep you happy, so I'm making sure that there's a stock of photographs ready to post for you even on the days when I can't take anything new.

We had a very dull day today, but the photo made me remember that tomorrow could be better and the sun will come out. Thank you Ron Dough. Please take more of the beautiful pictures. When I see pictures like this I become religious.
There is such a depth, amazing blue colours and rolling hills. I have to say I lived mostly on flat lands.
This is a little similar to Wales (not surprisingly because it is close).
Good to see you all in this happy room.

t-p! Good to see you around. I love Wales, too (I'm half Welsh myself). I remember you saying you lived near Aber once - this place is near there, and I try to go a lot...
