"Tell Jarvis, Dorcas is willing."
A phrase that has stuck in my head. Was it Great Expectations? I think it was possibly 'Peggotty' and 'Barkis' and 'David Copperfield' but otherwise, yes. Ooh, and I'm green with envy at both the barn owl and the stag too. How wonderful! (Though I'm still worrying a bit about the word 'hindsight' in connection with seeing the stag ) I've never ever seen a barn owl for ANYTHING LIKE that long. Brief, precious, silent glimpses at the most. And they are incredibly silent when they fly, aren't they, even when very close like that? Something to do with the, er, feathers. Oh envy, envy, envy (in the nicest possible way of course).

Mary Chambers, what a lovely picture of a Barn Owl Ive ever seen. Where was it taken?
I've no idea - I found it on Google Images, a site called www.blueskybirds.co.uk. I think you can buy the photos. It is wonderful, isn't it?

I think you are right George, but who is this Jarvis and Dorcas what is lodged in me head? Am I thinking of Jarvis Cocker? Was he a character out of Bleak House or did he record This is Hardcore? Life is complicated sometimes.

A comment from my teaching assistant made me today. After a child had accidentally confessed to a minor offence, my TA turned to me and said "Oo that was a bit of a fraudulent slip wasn't it!" Still not sure if she meant "Freudian slip" or not - anyone here ever heard of a "fraudulent slip"?

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Aaaah. I realised a couple of months back that the lenses of my glasses had gone beyond the point where I could see really clearly through them - no change from my eyes, not even scratches on the lenses themselves, but some coating or other had worn down to the point where everything was blurred. During my frantic chalumeau-tidying I found the lenses that these lenses had replaced a couple of years back. Same prescription; I'd had the old ones changed because of a couple of scratches and the same problem with the coating but only in its beginning stages (and only at the edges whereas on the newer lenses it was spreading to the middle). So I've just replaced the newer ones with the older ones and everything's much clearer now. I'll need new ones soonish anyway but this is a very acceptable intermediate stage.

Re Jarvis and whatisname, it reminded me of: - Now we must choose, said Mercier. - Between what? said Camier. - Ruin and collapse, said Mercier. - Could we not somehow combine them? said Camier.

Still not sure if she meant "Freudian slip" or not - anyone here ever heard of a "fraudulent slip"? A former colleague of mine used to say the same thing. He definitely meant "Freudian slip"! I was amused by the irony of the error, as I was by a standard form we used to use at work on which the one misspelled word was "anomallies" (sic)

Jan,
That's really great news about your owl: I've not seen one for ages, though they're certainly about: I hear them often. We're awash with buzzards here, though recently I've seen an increase in the smaller raptors. I'm just hoping that the private introduction of Red Kites about a hundred miles away will be sucessful: I miss them more than anything else from down south, and if we could have them here I'd be overjoyed.

fraudulent slip: an underskirt that gives the impression it will prevent strong light from shining through the garment, but actually completely fails to do so.
