The clouds look so flat!
Yes, they do because they are! There are several layers of air and each has its own current and cloud formation. You can see it again here, a shot which virtually joins up with the previous.

It's all quite fantastic. (that was a positive exclamation in what you quote, lest you think I was deriding your photograph). I have a great book near my bedside, 'The Drama of Weather' (no google picture alas). Well, the title's great anyway. Will have to get a better cloud-spotting guide soon I think.

No, 'patio, I didn't think it was derision: I know exactly what you meant: flat in a horizontal sense. And so they were still, later this afternoon, when I took a sunset stroll down the beach:

I used to do a lot of cloud painting, using landscapes as an excuse.

Ron, you've reminded me of one of my few sunset photos I have scanned in onto this pc: (Ynyslas of course!)

BBM, it's Ynyslas, as it says in MJ's post. It's a tiny place on the Ceredigion coast, north of Aberystwyth. West facing, so superb sunsets!

Hi MJ, Nice pic, at least you've got the horizon fairly horizontal! My apologies, Mr Pedantic Roger Hargreaves doesn't seem to have drawn him so you'll have to make do with

Thanks Ron. Kick the bar for me, martle! As martle says, brassbandmaestro, Ynyslas in on the West coast of Wales. It has an enormous sandy beach, extensive and well-protected sand-dunes (within the Nature Reserve which has its own Visitor Centre, concealed amongst the dunes http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/mid/sites/reserves/pages/ynyslas.shtml ), a few bungalows, a caravan site and a golf course. Andy, all the other sea-views taken on this visit have much more slanty horizons!

It is - particularly on a nice calm sunny day. Not quite so beautiful though when the rain's beating down for hours on end (as it was for 6 out of the 7 days when I was last there ) or the wind is whipping up the sand making the beach an unbearably painful place to be. Still, it makes you really appreciate the good weather when you're lucky enough to get some!
