You aren't alone, tinners. Your post brought back vivid memories of the time my brother first got engaged, at the age of 23. I was 19, and I was very disturbed. I stayed awake for the whole of one night. It was the feeling of someone I barely knew invading our close family that worried me. It's odd, because I didn't particularly get on with my brother, so I wouldn't have expected to feel much at all. That engagement fell through, and when he did finally marry at the age of 39, I was already married with two children, and I didn't care a bit!
When I was reading Britten's diaries, I was struck by his comment when his beloved sister married. He said (understatement, I suspect) that he was "unsettled by Beth's change of state".
Thank you, Mary! (Sorry, I only just saw this post.) It's good to know others have had the same sort of feelings. You've also made me laugh with BB's silly phrase, which makes it sound as if his sister didn't so much get married as melt!

The city is a process which always veers away from the form envisaged and desired, ... whose revenge upon its architects and planners undoes every dream of mastery. It is [also] one of the sites where Dasein is assigned the impossible task of putting right what can never be put right. - Rob Lapsley

Oh, I'll ditto that I had those sorts of feelings as well. All's good now though.

I'm happy because late this afternoon, when the rain had stopped tipping down and the gales subsided we had a busker. Not the usual violinist but bagpipes!! I don't know what tunes he was playing, they were very merry and jaunty but not reels and suddenly - everyone in the street had a HUGE smile on their face I gave him some money of course (and looking in his case he evidently was doing very well) but what was nice was that the Comprehensive children were making their way home and practically everyone of them that passed contributed some money. The sound has stayed with me all the way home. I do hope he'll be there again tomorrow.

I am happy because I got my new specs today! Hooray! I love `em, well, the frames anyway. Heavens they are green. Now I just have to practice blundering around in them for a while until I get the hang of them. So far, so good. I can actually see words on the computer screen without moving forwards, then backwards, then forward a bit, no, back a tad ....

I'm happy because I've done nearly everything on my great long list of things to do today! Just one thing left to do tomorrow because I didn't have time before the repair shop closed. I love productive days. Strange, but sometimes I seem to be working like a Trojan with nothing to show for it. However, all has gone to plan today. The rain even stopped long enough for me to take the dog for a good long run this afternoon. It started again just as I came back in the front door. Spooky but nice.

Not sure if this belongs here, in the Grumpy Room or in the Goodnight All thread!
I can never get to sleep after concerts, particularly after decent-to-good ones. Tonight's went well, I think, and it's always a thrill to play in the Wigmore. So it's taking me some time to unwind and feel sleepy.
Getting there. Gradually. Stepping away from the computer might help...

Glad to hear it went well! What you need is a nightcap. It's just about time for mine.

I had one of those this afternoon. No rum left now.

A likely story.
