It's not so much the drinking of it, but the inhaling of the aromatics.
A likely story. I was thinking of the cocoa, rather than the rum, Ollie. I can't quote chapter and verse, but there was some research published a few years ago which found that hot cocoa did indeed seem to help the human immune system fight off the common cold virus(es), but that inhaling the vapours from it was what did the trick. I just happen to like a tot of run in my cocoa. However, it has been found that the flavanols in cocoa help modulate the nitric oxide metabolism, which may lend support to its alleged heath-giving properties. I just happen to like a tot of rum in my cocoa.

Maybe it would be most effective to inhale cocoa aromatics while knocking back the rum...

What ho! I am H A P P Y. At long last my heavy cold virus has almost gone. It arrived on Boxing Day and left at New Year. Then, as it was missing me, came back on 2nd January thrice as determined to undermine the Soundwave constitution. I eventually had to call the medic who promptly ordered bed with large tablets and various things to sort the aches, coughs, sneezes, sweats etc. Yesterday morning I rose (weak from lack of Malt) but feeling more or less O.K. What annoys me is the thought that this "invisible creature" attacked me twice with but a few hours between assaults. Doesn't it know that there are plenty of other bodies around to sustain it? Is mine so attractive - I ask modestly? Is there such a thing as a remedial virus? Ah well!. Happiness is mine and, in a few hours, so will a large Malt be. Cheers to all A smiling S'wave

So glad you're feeling better Soundwave. I had that virus last year and it was awful. I had it more than twice! I kept feeling better, starting life again and then off we went once more. I was beginning to wonder if I was the first person to contract bird flu at one point as I seemed to be the only sufferer at that time. Good to know I've spread it liberally around the UK! Never let it be said that I'm mean. Anyway hope that's it for you now and that the new year will be healthy and energetic ....and well..... malty.

OK martle, and here I lose any shred of credibility but,- "Californian juicy red". It has a drawing of a flowering tree running up the label. (But I like Ferneyhough- honest.)

On a similar note, Waitrose has a very respectable Cuvee Chasseur for £2.99 a bottle (at least that's how much it cost last time I bought it, which was a good while ago). It's normally to be found on the bottom shelf of the French reds. Thanks to a fellow Prommer for introducing me to that one.

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

I'm happy because I've got my phone and internet back. The phone developed a fault on Thursday, oddly enough exactly when a BT van was outside my house. They said they'd send an engineer on Monday, which was a heck of a long wait, but someone turned up today. Hooray!!! Goodness, how I missed the internet. I felt as if I'd lost touch with the world. Bit sad, really .
