An obvious reason for transfer is the frailty and instability of the cassette as a carrier, John. Cassettes can jam, stick, stretch or become demagnetised without any human intervention. The decks, too, require a fair amount of maintenance to keep on song: not just the rigourous cleaning and demagnetisation of head(s) and capstan, but also cleaning and occasional replacement of drive bands and pinch roller. It all depends on how valuable the material on cassette is to you, but it's going to be considerably more permanent once it's transferred to a stable digital medium.

OK, honest now. Who else read that as John Cassavetes?  Smiley

I didn't at first, but, thanks to you George, I do now  Undecided

Indeed Ron, but the Wharfedale deck appears near-new, operates beautifully, and since I have/play so few cassettes neither the medium nor the machine are likely to fail in my lifetime, he says hopefully.

And anyway my kids are not interested in my stuff so it'll all end up in the Grand Music Paraphernelia and Memorabilia Car Boot Sale in 2033, on a deserted runway of the Old Birmingham International Airport

I have a lot of cassettes that need transferring, and as soon as I have the spare cash and some time my plan is to buy a Revox B710 or similar professional-quality cassette machine on eBay, get everything nicely digitised, and then put the machine back on eBay, probably having lost little or none of its resale value.

Since this is the Happy Room I am also pleased to report that as of today I have finished the two longest "movements" of my current work-in-progress, which is for cello and piano and electronic sounds. (It will have fifteen of them when it's finished but some will be as short as six seconds in duration.) So I can switch over to doing some copying and listening to some music.

Why thank you. A digestive would be most welcome, followed perhaps by a digestif.

Yes, that does look very appealing indeed. I still have to copy out a load of notes though, and I don't think a large G&T would do much for the accuracy thereof. Would anyone notice the difference, I hear some of you say, to which I answer mumblemumblemumble

That's fantastic, Richard.

I am only days away from being happy in a similar manner myself. I will elaborate when I get there (i.e. not happy yet), so only looking into this room from outside the window.

Happy! I had my accompaniment exam earlier today, which went off well, if I may say so. And the sight-reading was really rather easy. Smiley
I can relax for a bit now, although on Monday I will be securing some sounds for posterity in the RCM studio.

Hmmmmmmm........., well I not too sure that my culinery skills is not up to my wife's standards.

She made a rather nice Malaysian Curry tonight. Just had to warm it up, as she did the graft for it yesterday.
