Good to see you bearing up well there Ron.
Elsewhere on this thread I've said how much Mrs W and I are enjoying the gym. We found an excellent gym about 5 miles from here, in a big hotel. We don't go as often as we should, going there takes up 1.5 - 2 hours, but generally we feel healthier and it has encouraged us to eat more good food and less bad food. I just needed to be fit but my wife is overweight and has some health problems; seems to have helped her very much!

The lovely thing about this gym is its location and proximity. It's actually owned by (and named for) Liz McColgan, the Dundee-born long distance runner, who is very much in evidence most days, and can often be seen running and cycling around the neighbourhood. After being used to gyms in cities (when on tour with shows, it's not unusual to find that theatres have special arrangements with local facilities) where you come out onto noisy streets full of traffic fumes, the walk down the wooded drive to the coast road with the tang of the sea is a very pleasant alternative. There's a steam room, sauna and swimming pool, too, so it can be used for relaxation as well as work-outs. Even with the walk, I can complete a full programme and be back in about 90 minutes, and since it's open from 06.45 until 21.00 on weekdays it's rarely that I can't find some space in the day to pop along.

I joined the gym last year and it only lasted a few weeks because I seem to have been ill ever since. Red wine/white wine/any wine = migraine carbs = too many exercise = plenty via dog and child combined red bush tea = BARF green tea = bliss water = litres and litres of it. Love the stuff. Happy anyway.

To return to the blood donation: I'd certainly urge every who could do it to put it into action: with a close family member having already needed ten units of it over the past fortnight, I'm very aware just how vitally important plentiful stocks are, and was delighted that I had to queue for some little while in Arbroath yesterday because the turn-out at the community centre was so high that the team were overwhelmed. Acceptance conditions are fairly stringent, so there will be some here who might not be accepted, but for many it's no big deal, with virtually no discomfort or side effects, plus the satisfaction of knowing that one has helped others.

I'd do it if I could. I was knocked back when I tried because of severe headaches and possibly the fact that I self-inject. They can't be too careful I suppose. I was very disappointed though. Every able-bodied person should give blood.

I used to give blood, but shortly after getting my bronze badge they changed the rules, due to the CJD scare. I dutifully reported that I had received cranial surgery in the mid-seventies. When they tried to check, the notes on the op. had gone missing, so they could not sort out for sure whether any foreign dura matter had been involved. To play safe they 'banned' me from donating.

Remember you telling us that before, Bryn: there are all sorts of other reasons why potential donors may be excluded, which makes it all the more important that those who may, do.

I see they have since further tightened the precautions to exclude anyone who may have had a blood transfusion since 1980. Agreed, Ron, all the more important that those who can, do donate.

I'm happy (apart from at the prospect of a 35% hike in gas charges ), mostly because on Friday I depart for an extended sojourn in the Valleys in order to write music and eat a lot of lamb. 'Ha!', I hear you expostulate. Well, that's the idea anyway. Do you have any idea how much effort it took to organise this much 'free' time? And even now I'll have to dash back at least once on university business. The good/bad news is that I yesterday purchased a laptop, so will be able to procrastinate for hours on these boards keep in touch with important stuff and deal with any work crises remotely, as well as make good use of Sibelius (the programme, not the composer). (Does anyone else other than me see some pretty deep flaws in this plan? )

(Does anyone else other than me see some pretty deep flaws in this plan? ) I wonder whether these are the same flaws that affect my occasional days of working at home to catch up with report writing away from the distractions of the office ... only to be seduced by the distractions of home, garden, CD player and these boards

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Hope you enjoy it, flaws notwithstanding, martle. If you don't mind tellin', where exactly? You'll have to visit this page a lot to get yourself in the mood!

Eru, it's here: ...just north of Aberystwyth. I stay in a house in the middle of that strip along the beach. MabelJane knows this place, since she used to stay at Ynyslas, on the dunes at the very top of that stretch of beach. And, oh yes, I know the Mabby! Ever read Alan Garner's The Owl Service? One of the scariest books I've ever read, despite being ostensibly written for teens.
