Sorry, bbm, I was referring to the game martle played in his idle student days.
I was at friend's do last year where two of the guests were his fellow students at theological college thirty years ago. I can tell you I was shocked. And one of them was now a canon of a cathedral, and one, having gone over, teaches in Rome. If only they had restricted themselves to card games...

On the other hand, it was my years at a boys' public school, with frequent contact with our peers in a German gymnasium, that allowed me to understand Ollie's recent contribution to the Funny Ha-Ha Room: http://r3ok.myforum365.com/index.php?topic=1011.msg144827#msg144827

<Discovers hockey stick reduced to sawdust> <Sighs in relief> Blames woodworm Why do schools insist that hockey is a winter sport, regardless of what they make you play it wearing? Plus they seemed to delight in scheduling it first thing in the morning through December to February. Was that meant to be character building or something? Or is it that the impact is less painful when your shins are already numb from frostbite?

The Norf Lunnon boys' school where I undertook my secondary education was just around the corner from a convent school, a Victorian pile of dark and forbidding mystery and the focus of vague yearnings from the spotty adolescent males nearby. There were however a couple of likely lads who openly boasted of how they regularly fraternised with the inmates of the said convent, occasionaly even entering its hallowed grounds. This arrangement came to an abrupt halt the day they got found out and were frogmarched back into our school between two pairs of nuns - at luncthtime, in full view of the whole school - something from which their reputations never recovered.

I have said this before, but lacrosse is even worse than hockey. I think you can be hit in more places. I managed to get out of it, mostly. Character building? It certainly taught me how to tell lies, a useful life skill.
