I am happy, but not very.
This morning I parked my car "somewhere" in Uxbridge as I generally do when flying out of Heathrow for a short time, and got on the U3 bus. The distance, I'm told by Google Maps, is 4.3 miles. The bus does go all around the houses and normally takes 25 minutes or so. This morning it took 75. That would be an average speed of 3.44 mph if the most direct route had been taken. Then I just missed a train from the bus station to Terminal 5 and had to wait 15 minutes for the next one. All in all therefore I suppose I should be pleased to have arrived in Sweden at all.

I know it was Alaistir Sims in the original. (Joyce Grenfell as the undercover police woman as a gym mistress.)
But who played her in the intermediate versions?

You could have walked that, couldn't you?! Although possibly not with a laptop and whatever other sound equipment in tow ... I'm happy because I just had a call from a Radio 3 producer asking me to review some contemporary Italian music for CD Review. I'm also very nervous because (a) it's in less than 3 weeks, and (b) the composers in question are Scelsi + Sciarrino, and I have a sort of 'deaf spot' with Scelsi which I suppose I'd better try to overcome if I'm going to sound suitably authoritative.

I could have walked it, yes - this is one of those rare but in a way welcome trips when I'm not dragging tons of gear around.
What's your problem with Scelsi? apart from his horrible piano music that is.

Richard, glad that Uxbridge didn't totally bugler things up and that you got there in one, if slightly frazzled, piece.

What's your problem with Scelsi? apart from his horrible piano music that is.
I've just never really found a way that satisfies me of talking or writing about the music (rather than, say, about issues surrounding it - the cult of personality etc.). Same problem I have with Varèse, in a way. And I'm not sure how good I'd be at assessing the merits/demerits of a particular recording ... But I'll work on it! Sometimes a job like this can focus my thoughts on a composer I've previously stumbled over.

Last time I was down at Heathrow, it looked as if pedestrians were no longer accorded open entry (for reasons which might just be apparent). In days of yore the public could walk through the tunnels under the runways, as I did often when working at the HiFi exhibitions held at various hotels nearby, travelling up from Reading to the airport by coach and then walking to the hotel, were no link bus available. Air quality in the tunnels was horrendous, though.

I think there's a lot to be gained from comparing the two recordings of the choral/orchestral piece Uaxuctum - first the blended, indistinct version conducted by Jürg Wyttenbach, and then the more recent one conducted by Peter Rundel which lays bare the interior of the textures in what seems after Wyttenbach to be an almost shocking way. Personally I don't think the suthorship/personality cult issues are that interesting. I suppose my main criticism of it is that it hardly ever really gets beyond "sketches", though that could also be seen as a positive attribute.

Personally I don't think the authorship/personality cult issues are that interesting. In the case of Scelsi I agree. They exist, and certainly ought to be mentioned, but I don't think there's much further mileage in exploring them, and I find they don't shed much light on the music. But that's sort of what I meant: I don't find repeated listening and thinking sheds much light on the music either - almost as if to vindicate Scelsi's own interest in simply 'listening deeper', tapping into some kind of spiritual continuum. I suppose my main criticism of it is that it hardly ever really gets beyond "sketches", though that could also be seen as a positive attribute.
