Oh dear, it's me again. I'm ill. Gastro-intestinal stuff (not diarrhoea). I've been ill-ish for several days, but thought I was getting better. I've been awake almost all night, pain (not desperately severe, but persistent) and panic, because I thought these things got better quicker than this, and I've got things to do, and I'm supposed to be going away for Christmas.
Booooooo; hope it doesn't keep up for any length of time. (Oh I was so happy when my Egyptian tummy problems fixed themselves (I didn't know that one could discharge mucous out *that* end before...).  Just going to do my damned best to avoid eating anything dodgy this time 'round!)

That's what the manservant's for innit?!

Anyway: get well soon!

THis kind of infections take a long time to clear.
On the positive side there is still a long way before Christmas. Get well soon, Mary. Keep us posted how you are doing.

Oh dear, Mary. You have my heartfelt sympathies. Any kind of stomach upset really does drag a person down and make them feel exhausted. There  is an unpleasant tummy bug doing a tour of duty at the moment, it sounds as though it`s decided to visit you Sad  If you`re getting pain in spasms you could try chamomile tea, it`s anti-spasmodic and it`s excellent for colicky pain. I know that many people say "Urgh" to the tea but that`s probably because they treat it like a normal tea bag - strong chamomile is yucky. Just wave the tea bag at the hot water and throw it away (the tea bag, not the tea!)

I do hope you start to feel better soon. Being on your own and ill is no fun Sad

Mary, if I were closer, I'd be coming round with ginger tea (just pour boiling water over crushed root ginger and allow to stand for five minutes or so, with a saucer over the top of the cup to help to retain the steam-born essential oils; add honey if required) as well as chamomile. The other thing I'd really recommend for any gastric problems (even mild food-poisoning) is pink tonic (proper Indian Tonic Water, such as you-know-whose, which contains quinine) plus Angostura bitters. You probably won't have either of those in the house right now, but worth stocking for the future. As martle says, loads of fluids: on the hour every hour at the very least. If there's anyone who can get some messages (sorry, shopping) in for you, then a box of sachets of rehydration powders would be very helpful too.

Thanks, everyone. I do feel absolutely wretched, but I've put off a friend who was coming tomorrow, which is a relief. I don't want her to catch anything, just before Christmas, and also I just don't feel up to conversation (except this sort!). She could have done "messages" for  me, I suppose, but I can manage. I'm drinking very weak Earl Grey, don't feel like eating any of the food in the house.

I will bear all your suggestions in mind - I don't have any of them at the moment.

Mary, whatever you're drinking (well, with obvious exceptions!) you need to be drinking LITRES of it. I'd suggest water is best if you don't have any of Mort or Ron's remedies to hand, and I'd drink it lukewarm (which is easier on the system than cold).

Poor Mary.  This might be why you've been feeling a bit "down" of late - you must have been coming down with this virus.  If you lived nearer I'd pop round to bring you tea and field your calls/doorbell etc.  No harm though in just pretending you're out for once.  Snuggle down and drink lots.

I got up at 5 as well - but only because I couldn't sleep. I've been wrapping presents. Roll Eyes

I'm a bit far away to answer the door, Mary, but here's something warm and comforting:

When I was a child and had stomach problems, my Mum always suggested drinking flat coca-cola.  It seems to work at soothing a painful stomach.  That and dry toast (i.e. no butter)

I have nothing but sympathy for anyone with problems in that region. I had three weeks off work last month, including a week in hospital, for abdominal adhesions. The worst thing was trying to get doctors to take me seriously, even considering it's something I've had before - the first time being when I was 18 months old, and I've got a big scar across my stomach to prove it! In the end I had to get a taxi to Wrexham Maelor hospital at 11pm. I find Weetabix the best food.

But I'm glad to hear that the young man in question is slowly coming round. I have a close relative, 18 years old, who has been in a persistent vegetative state for about 20 months now following a car crash last year. He'd since got MRSA and they'd just given up on the antibiotics a few weeks ago when we got the call to visit him quickly because he didn't have long left. Someone drove me down to Leicester as I'd only just got out of hospital myself but he's still hanging in there even now. 18 year olds can be very resiliant, apparently.

You are all very sweet. I do feel a bit better this morning - more sleep for a start, which always helps. The tips about Weetabix and drinking water lukewarm are both useful. I've just had both! At the last minute (actually before I read it here) I had added Weetabix to my Ocado order. I don't usually eat it, but it is comforting.

That's a frightening story, Tony. My friend's son is much happier with his parents than he was in hospital, but he still has little short term memory, and his blood sugar is still very unstable. It's hard work for his parents - a completely different life.

I noticed that you'd already posted on the poetry thread, Mary, so I guessed that you must be feeling a little better. Glad to hear that your weather's fine: that will help! Up here it's cloudy and the edges of sky at the horizons are still yet an orangey pink, and likely so to stay for the rest of the day until the slow darkness comes. Don't forget that following this bout you'll need to build up your strength again, and particularly lost salt: if you can lay your hands on some of those rehydration powders it will help: chemists and some supermarkets stock them.

You mean 'bag' or 'bug'?  I have a friend who had to get an ileostomy over the summer; they're hoping to be able to reroute his upper intestines so that he can function without external apparatus; the whole affair has been understandably rather unpleasant for him.
