Ruth, It is very annoying to get one cold after another. I hope you take a lot of that lemon (prefer lemon in my tea with honey) and get well soon. We have you up and running on this board in no time. The most important thing is to keep warm (which is not easy if you have cold).
Thank you t_p. The annoying thing is, I don't feel ill, I simply have a blocked nose, cough etc. I am remedying it with lemon powders (that's the proper medicinal stuff) during the day, and alcoholic toddies (lemon, honey, whisky, hot water) last thing at night. Fortunately all my favourite singers are sick too, so I have no need to overexert myself by attending concerts in order to hear them (see the Grumpy Old Rant thread! )

I'm sitting in my office, the heater is on beside me and I have my coat on and I am still freezing cold. This doesn't bode well...

This year cold is difficult to shake. May be you are stressed, Jonathan? It is harder to fight cold if you are stressed. May be you just need more rest. I hope you get well soon. Echinacea is very good for boosing your immune system. I second what marbleflugel says about this herb.

Hi t-p, Yes, I'm stressed but not as much as a few weeks ago. Echinacea may be a good idea... Thanks for the advice!

Glad to hear you are not so stressed now Jonathan. I know some people who swear by Echinacea but I think test results on it are inconclusive. However, I think if you feel something is doing you good and perks you up then you should take it

I was told you shouldn't take Echinacea continuously for very long periods.

I've heard that too, Mills: a maximum of two weeks on and then two weeks off before starting again.

You need to go carefully with alternative medicines. They very often aren't properly tested, so there's no guarantee they're safe, let alone that they have any effect other than the placebo one, which of course is quite powerful. Minor illnesses usually get better anyway.

Yes, don`t take it all the time. The immune system might need to be nudged along on occasion, but it shouldn`t rely on some kind of crutch.

My neck "went" when I was in the shower this morning, and has been agony all day I'm currently dosed up on paracetemol & codeine pills and ibuprofen gel. I think it's trapped a nerve, too, as I'm getting pins and needles in my right hand Based on past experience it should sort itself out within a couple of days. I blame my teenage years of carrying a heavy bag on a paper round 7 days a week, always using the same shoulder. It's the only bit of me which now falls to bits on a regular basis.

That sounds quite horrible, Ruth. I always worried about paper boys (I never had a paper girl) - especially in winter, when as well as heavy bags they had vile weather. Those little footsteps before dawn in the snow....We don't have paper deliveries here any more, because they can't get anyone to do it.

It's funny (i.e. not very) that you should say that. My mum hurt her shoulder carrying papers in her Christmas holidays while she was at Uni (she decided that she was strong enough to carry both bags... whoops) and it hurt a bit at the time, but not half as much as it did forty years later! In the meantime it had vanished, but (for a reason I can't actually remember) it came back to haunt her. It's better now though.

Aaaaah Ruth that sounds totally gross. Hope things sort themselves out quickly and without too much violence. Anyway, I look forward to seeing some trippy posts by you over the next couple of days.

Hi everybody,
Thanks for all the good wishes, including your PM, Tommo - I hope your throat gets better soon.
My neck has loosened up a lot, and I am now only on one set of painkillers rather than one set of each of every painkilling ingredient it's safe to take simultaneously. Also the circulation in my right arm and hand seems to have returned to normal-ish; fortunately I have been on a training course today which has been mainly discussion and minimal writing (typing seems OK, but I was jotting things down last night and it made my arm ache).
