Yes, it is not good, branssbandmaestro. I had a friend with asthma. She smoked (started during the war and could not stop). She would hold inhaler in one hand and make a cigaret with another. She lived into the very old age. Keep your spirits up. After bad days good days come.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Here I am and all was absolutely wonderful! Had the op and they removed what the consultant said he was sure was a benign polyp. It's gone off to be analysed as a matter of routine but he said he was positive it didn't look cancerous. I can only assume they usually can tell by what they see. No problems with the general anaesthetic because the anesthetist took on board what usually happens to me and acted accordingly. I just love a happy ending! P.S. All you young 'uns under 40, make the most of it because it seems that after that age, you keep developing little lumps and bumps which are absolutely harmless 99.9% of the time - but which do cause a bit of worry until you find out for sure. Thank you so much for all your good wishes and kind thoughts. Very much appreciated.

Mills,
I'm very, very pleased to hear your news. It was absolutely the right thing to have made sure that all was OK, frightening though the procedure may have been: now you know that you can push those worries aside and get on with your day-to-day responsibilities.
Lots of relieved love,

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.
