Here is a children's story: Mary, Milly, Martle and Marbleflugel did not feel well. They were tired and had to rest for a while. Meanwhile they were paitient, slept or listened to music when they could. They thought: It is not so terrible, the most important thing is to get as comfortable as possible, things are not so bad, just incorrect thinking makes it so.

Hi t-p, I think "Dolly feels poorly" might be better. I don'k like using the word "sick" for all illnesses - must be the association with having to line up "sick buckets" for sicky children - though fortunately I haven't had to very often. Get well soon martle. Sleep well marbleflugel.

MabdlJane, Thank you for suggestion. It sounds good to me. I am beginning to feel that some music becomes absolete in our time. I will try to see if children react better if the piece is called "Dolly feels poorly" instead of Sick Doll.

Hello everyone, thank you so much for your good wishes and messages. I am improving, although much more slowly than I'd like. I'm on my second course of antibiotics now, these being much stronger and more specific. If these don't work I have to try a course of steroids which my doc says should "knock it on the head once and for all". The pain has gone from the abscess as well, so apart from being very tired and sounding like an old tramp on a bench every time I cough, I think I'm getting better. Thanks again and my best wishes also to all of you who are unwell at the moment.

So glad to hear that you're improving, Milly - it sounds like a really nasty thing. You'll have to be patient - not easy! Was the mouth abscess anything to do with teeth, or something different? Sounds horrible.

Feeling a bit better by the day thanks Mary. The abscess doesn't appear to be anything to do with my teeth. I haven't been to the dentist yet, but it has no decay and it isn't one with a filling. The doctor had a look because it's a large back molar - but she couldn't see a problem. She put forward the view that I'm just very run down and exhausted. Coughing is exhausting actually. You expend an enormous amount of energy. I've never had bronchitis before and hope that this episode hasn't set something off that I'm going to keep getting. I'm generally very healthy indeed and all my life the only real "illness" I've suffered from is migraine. It's a depressing thought.

I'm going to be self-indulgent and post in here. Sneezing, coughing, sore throat, tight chest, headache... Struggled through teaching today but wondering whether to admit defeat and ring in sick now for tomorrow rather than see how I am tomorrow and give them less time to replace me. 2 of my own kids have got it and the 3rd says he has a sore throat which is how this starts. I know I shouldn't teach when ill, and I could pass it on too, but teachers tend to keep going until they're on their knees.

MJ, make that call. You know you're sick, and you won't feel better tomorrow - probably the opposite. So spare the little ones your germs. Schools (and universities ) are hothouses for bugs. Dr Green

Seconded vigorously, MJ. You're obviously not well, don't soldier on. It will only prolong it. Perhaps we could do with a return to this instead of people feeling so pressurised to go into work no matter how bad they feel. Matron Mort
